Atomic Robo & the Dawn of a New Era #2

Atomic Robo & the Dawn of a New Era #2 comic reviewWith the grown-ups gone, and Robo down in the basement with his secret project, it falls on Foley to get the new Action Scientist recruits up to speed. Atomic Robo & the Dawn of a New Era #2 jumps around a bit, keeping us up to date on the status of the various characters.

We see the newbies bonding and even carving out their own clubhouse (with an ominous basement that foreshadows trouble?). We also check in on Vikram and Lang‘s vacation which has taken a detour from the beach in favor of scientific study (which itself may have come to an end given what the pair unexpectedly run into). And we see Foley spend some time with the recruits, lecturing them on how much impossible is acceptable for a Tesladyne project. There are also more scenes between Robo and Alan as the second issue continues to push a father/son vibe (even having the pair play catch).

Atomic Robo & the Dawn of a New Era #1

Atomic Robo & the Dawn of a New Era #1 comic reviewAtomic Robo & the Dawn of a New Era begins with no great catastrophe but simply with Atomic Robo getting the new Tesladyne up and running. This includes welcoming the new recruits who are anxious for some science-adventuring, Bernard taking the opportunity to examine the local dormant volcano (yep, nothing dangerous there), Vikram and Lang leaving on a trip (surely no trouble they could get into), and Robo secretly hiding his new creation Alan in the basement away from prying eyes (nope, nothing could go wrong here either).

So I guess we’re ready to sit back and enjoy a leisurely five-issue mini-series with no problems to solve. Oh, wait. This is an Atomic Robo comic! Okay, bring on the zany science craziness!

Atomic Robo and the Spectre of Tomorrow #3

Atomic Robo and the Spectre of Tomorrow #3 comic reviewThings continue to be hectic at the site of the new offices of Tesladyne Industries. Lang and Abasi are trying to get the halted construction of the new Tesladyne back on schedule (realizing their boss stealing the private jet of the neighbor who forced the stoppage isn’t likely to help), while Abasi is doing his best to make sure Lang doesn’t kill anyone.

Meanwhile, Atomic Robo is mostly ignoring his team and attempting to covertly help Walker and Broughton, now working for CERES, on the impossible cybernetic outbreak that keeps popping up in the most unusual places at an increasing rate.

Atomic Robo and the Spectre of Tomorrow #1

Atomic Robo and the Spectre of Tomorrow #1 comic reviewAtomic Robo versus… the Homeowners Association? The first issue of the latest volume of Atomic Robo sees our robotic scientist/adventurer setting out for greener pastures by beginning the construction of the new Tesladyne Institute in the badlands of New Mexico’s Jornada del Muerto desert. It seems that even those who have save the Earth aren’t immune to bureaucratic red tape. Introduced to the facility and various characters through they eyes of the returning Foley, we witness the frustration of of several different Tesladyne workers, including Robo himself, at the lack of progress to get the new facility up and running. Despite having only two neighbors, Robo is dragged into a homeowners meeting with Sir Richard Branson who cites enough Tesladyne infractions to halt all “progress” on the site. Poor Robo. Where’s a psychotic dinosaur to hit when you need one?

Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #3

Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #3Atomic Robo and his adventures in China during WWII continue. While hiding out with the Ghost Bandits, Robo and his friends have time to contemplate the enhanced super-soldiers they are up against. This allows the comic to take a step back and muse over the idea of the Zero Point and how their enemies are drawing power from the lowest energy state in the universe and using it for their own purposes.

Very much the middle issue of a storyline, Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #3 doesn’t offer much in the way of bells and whistles or memorable moments but does deepen the story. Robo’s musings also help the science adventurer come up with a plan on how to take down the enchanced soldiers. Of course not every plan is foolproof, and rushing into the fray might just get our hero into even more trouble.
