Following the likes of WandaVision, Loki, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Moon Knight, and The Eternals, Marvel Studios continues to push Phase Four in new and different ways. While not everything has been as strong as some of the earlier core Marvel titles, it certainly hasn’t been boring. In many ways, you could refer to Phase Four of the MCU as Marvel Studios’ experimental teenage years. Enter director Sam Raimi.

A tie-in issue to The Death of Doctor Strange ongoing Marvel story arc, The Death of Doctor Strange: X-Men/Black Knight is more an issue to flesh-out Jacks Chopra than anything else as both daughter and father work out their trust issues in the middle of a battle against demons.

Doctor Strange is dead and the mystical barriers he had erected to keep Earth safe have fallen. London (and the X-Men) have been swallowed up and Jackie joins the fray. Unfortunately, the X-Men have all been turned into demons by Necromon the Netherking and Jacks is out to prove she doesn’t need any help to save the day. Defenders #1

Defenders #1 comic reviewThe arrival of the new Masked Raider inside the Sanctum Sanctorum with the story of a villain of the Enclave lost in time that could alter the past prompts to use fate and create a new team of Defenders to save the timeline. The team he gets is not exactly what he expected. Welcome to the latest version of the Defenders.

Along with Strange and the Raider, the other members of the team are the Silver Surfer, the Red Harpy, and Cloud. While we get appearances from the various characters here, we don’t get much in the way of interaction (other than confusion as to being pulled out of time and space by Dr. Strange’s spell and delivered to the planet of Taa) while most of the comic centers around the Raider explaining the trouble to the good Doctor.

The Amazing Spider-Man #51

The Amazing Spider-Man #51 comic reviewOkay, it’s been a bit since I’ve picked up a Spider-Man comic. Looks like Peter’s life isn’t any less complicated than I remember. His friends have been possessed by the villain known as Kindred. The issue opens with Spidey going to Dr. Strange for help with a possessed Silk. While getting all magical and ominous, Strange’s attempts to cure Silk fail leaving him questioning just what is going on as the comic appears to be tying events back to that time Spider-Man literally made a deal with the Devil and reset all of reality. Yeah… Spider-Man fans usually don’t like to speak of this.

Making bad decisions apparently isn’t something Peter has grown out of either as he enlists the help of Black Cat to steal a mystical artifact from Strange which sends the Wall-Crawler to the his dreamscape in the astral plane where the villain awaits (and now he has no wizard to help him). Great plan.

The Superior Spider-Man #5

The Superior Spider-Man #5 comic reviewThere are two stories at play in The Superior Spider-Man #5. The first involves Otto‘s date which goes surprisingly well until a late admission to his true identity. His date doesn’t take things all that well, running out of the apartment to the nearest policeman. However, things take an unusual turn from there as the policemen are revealed to be possessed by some kind of demons which are spreading across the city leading to the unlikely team-up of the Superior Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange arrival on-scene to discover Doctor Octopus dressed as Spider-Man does help get the two off to the best start, but the sorcerer soon discovers that Otto isn’t the immediate problem. Writer Christos Gage goes deep into the MCU vault to pull out Master Pandemonium as the creature responsible for the city’s ills. A living doorway to Hell, the demonic former actor is increasingly dangerous the longer he remains in New York.
