Mockingbird #8

Mockingbird #8If the last issue was a bit of a mess Mockingbird ends its eight-issue run on a high note. With the Phantom Rider exposed the final issue of the series is devoted to tying up all the loose ends (while still having the same kind of zany fun we’ve become accustomed to). Writer Chelsea Cain takes some pleasure in playing with the Rider’s unusual power set such as his ghost horse and his ability to summon the dead to do his bidding. In this instance, however, neither works out exactly as the Phantom Rider planned.

Fitting in as much of odd pieces of the story as possible, even the Corgis get a couple of cameos, the issue comes to a close with Bobbi defeating the villain and then (after being unceremoniously dumped overboard) enjoying a few relaxing days at a beach-side resort.

Mockingbird #7

Mockingbird #7Mockingbird‘s voyage aboard a super-hero fanboy cruise to the Bermuda Triangle continues as she and Hunter become deputized to investigate the murder aboard the ship of a stranger who believed he had important information to help Hawkeye who currently stands trial for killing a defenseless Bruce Banner. One of the strengths of the series so far is the comic’s tongue-in-cheek nature. That said, Mockingbird #7 is the first issue of the series where things begin to get out of hand as Chelsea Cain is so quick with quips gags, in-panel jokes (such as what each character’s favorite cocktail is) that the actually story gets stalled for too much of this comic.

Mockingbird #6

Mockingbird #6Chasing some questionable intelligence, and removing herself from the circus of Hawkeye‘s upcoming trial, Mockingbird boards a super-hero-themed cruise ship where the source’s need for secrecy, an encounter with a former boyfriend, and a murder all stand in the way of Bobbi finding what she seeks.

Mockingbird #6 finds a way to tie-in the events of Civil War II without forcing the reader to know more than the basics about Marvel’s latest big event. The series continues its goofy style with the latest issue, complete with a Corgi convention on the same cruise line and Bobbi’s consistent struggle to find any useful information on a boat headed straight for the Bermuda Triangle (and likely even more trouble).

Mockingbird #5

Mockingbird #5The next stop on Mockingbird‘s search for answers about the unusual virus in her system is a super-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. medical lab deep below New York City where S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists have been experimenting with Bobbi’s blood on cadavers and accidentally created a group of rampaging zombies. You know, an average day in the life of a Marvel hero.

There’s plenty of action here along with Bobbi’s unusual new “glow stick hand power” which seems to repel zombies. Since that’s kind of a limited resource, I’ll be curious to see if Mockingbird can find additional uses for the new power. However, once overrun by zombies the hand power proves less than effective and it’s time for our hero to fall back to more traditional means of zombie fighting. Mockingbird smash!

Mockingbird #4

Mockingbird #4Mockingbird is one of the few (arguably the only) Marvel Comics character whose appearance in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has improved the character. Largely a second-stringer, Bobbi’s new popularity helped to get our gal her own solo series. Opening in Kazakhstan where the same pathogen dormant inside her wiped out an entire species of antelope, Mockingbird #4 takes us along on Bobbi’s search for answers into an A.I.M. rip-off’s secret underwater laboratory. And while she’s there, why not spend the time to save Hawkeye who somehow got himself captured by the science soldiers of T.I.M. (Total Idea Mechanics). Seriously, no Marvel hero should ever let him live this down.
