Vengeance of the Moon Knight #2

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #2

Framed in much the same manner as the first issue, Vengeance of Moon Knight #2 gives us Tigra talking things through with Dr. Andrea Sterman while providing a bit more of the new Moon Knight’s confrontation with the inhabitants of the Midnight Mission. By the end of the issue a couple of things are clear, this Moon Knight is certainly capable of holding his own against any of them, and he is not Marc Spector.

Marc Spector is dead. Isn’t he? We’ll get back to that one. Kicking off a new series we get a throwback to the previous series with a character, this time Reese rather than Marc Spector, talking things through with Dr. Andrea Sterman which offers the framing to see events of the past few weeks play out. Most of the issue is with the characters struggling to move on after Marc’s death, the Midnight Mission holding shiva for their fallen friend (with a few Marvel heroes stepping by to pay their respects) and then getting back to work.

And so we come to the end. More of an extended epilogue (with a couple additional epilogues thrown in at the end) than a final issue, we get the gloating and reasoning of the Black Spectre and the death of Moon Knight to prevent the former friend turned super-villain’s attack on New York City. We also get Zodiac making a deal with the Midnight Mission, a Leverage-style tease for Marc’s former comrades continuing on without him, and a final word from writer Jed MacKay who promises the journey isn’t over just yet.

Moon Knight #29

With the end of the arc quickly approaching, Moon Knight as his friends fight their way through the remaining obstacles to save the city from the Black Spectre. Moon Knight #29 includes not one but two reveals of the villain’s true identity. After an exhausted Marc Spector kills the Black Spectre, Moon Knight discovers it was only Ryan Trent (one of the villains who formerly used that name) only to get blindsided and discover the identity of the true mastermind of his troubles.

Moon Knight #28

“The Last Days of Moon Knight” bring Marc Spector one step closer to the Black Spectre through a series of fighters, traps, and weapons which will weed out Moon Knight’s support (such as poor Tigra being sidelined after stepping on a landmine) and setting up a final confrontation between the pair in the next issue. With the fate of the entire city at stake, Marc Spector cannot fail… no matter what the cost.
