Castle - Veritas

Things get serious for Beckett (Stana Katic) very quickly as she continues her late night snooping into the lives of William Bracken (Jack Coleman), Vulcan Simmons (Jonathan Adams), and the man who connects them (who ends up dead less than an hour after Beckett stops tailing him one night). Then Simmons turns up dead as well, after being tortured to death by a methodical killer seeking answers, only minutes after Beckett questioned him. And when Lanie (Tamala Jones) matches the ballistics of the second murder to Kate’s gun Detective Beckett becomes the target of a manhunt.

When Esposito (Jon Huertas) makes a discovery that Smith (Geoff Pierson) faked his death, Beckett and Castle (Nathan Fillion) contact a ghost who has been seeking evidence to put Bracken away since going into hiding but has constantly come up empty with nothing to offer to the pair but rumors of an incriminating tape a single word of advice: Run.

With the walls closing in on their friend, and in need of all the allies they can get, Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito read Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald) into the entire story involving Braken, Beckett’s mother’s murder, and why a Presidential nominee is framing a NYPD Detective for murder. One attack on Beckett’s life later, and a drugged flashback to her first meeting with Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), and Beckett has a solid lead on the one piece of evidence which could bring Bracken’s world crashing down.

Although the end feels a tad rushed, “Veritas” runs the gamut of emotion with Castle constantly at Beckett’s side as she closes the book on one of the series’ longest running storylines. The Montgomery flashback, offering the same scene the Captain described to Castle in “Knockout” is a nice touch, as is the use of the elephants in the room (literally) being put to good use. With the serious episode behind them the wackiness can ensue with next week’s season finale and wedding episode which apparently hits a big of a snag when Kate discovers legally she’s already married.
