Person of Interest - The Devil's Share

Following the death of Carter (Taraji P. Henson) both Shaw (Sarah Shahi) and an injured Reese (Jim Caviezel) separately scour the city for any trace of Simmons (Robert John Burke). Unable to find or stop Reese, Finch (Michael Emerson) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) convince Shaw to help them find Simmons first which begins with tracking down Quinn (Clarke Peters) who is being guarded by Federal Marshals and about to be indicted as the head of HR. But to accomplish this Finch will have to find a way to trust Root (Amy Acker).

The odd foursome of Shaw, Finch, Root, and Fusco set out together to get Quinn, but despite their collective talents Reese still manages to not only locate the man first but pacify an entire building full of Federal Marshals just to have a little talk with the head of HR. The episode’s big action scene has quite a few highlights including Reese slowly working his way through the Federal agents to get to Quinn and Root, guns in both hands, taking out the Russian hit squad with similar plans for Quinn all on her own.

“The Devil’s Share” offers flashbacks which all revolve around the common theme of death including Finch dealing with the death of Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen), the circumstances that ending Shaw’s career as a surgeon, Fusco receiving mandatory therapy after a shooting, and a mission from Reese’s past killing a member of his own organization. It’s Fusco’s flashback that moves the episode into its final 10 minutes as the detective tracks down the man who tortured him, threatened the life of his son, and killed his partner. With Fusco decides to honor Carter’s memory by arresting, rather than killing, Simmons, one more member of the larger Person of Interest family reappears to repay his debt to the fallen hero.

The episode not only wraps up the three-episode arc but the overall HR storyline as well. It also gives Fusco one of his few truly heroic moments, returns Elias (Enrico Colantoni) from the shadows, and foreshadows the show’s next big arc with the major threat Root hints at. Root returns voluntarily to her prison in the library still trying to earn Harold’s trust, further cementing her role as an ally of the group, and it will be interesting to see where the show takes Elias from here as friend, enemy, or something in-between to Reese and his team.

  1. I was sure they were going to kill Fusco. He’s been the odd man out with all the new characters. Killing Carter came out of nowhere but using her death to make Fusco more of a hero was genius. I love this show.

  2. The first few minutes of this episode with the montage of scenes without dialog set only to music was absolutely brilliant. So well done. A great episode, and a nice tribute to a beloved character when every other character goes out of their way to avenge her, including Elias. I couldn’t ask for more.

  3. This beginning of this episode made me cry for Carter and the end made me cry for Fusco. So many feels.
