Preacher - Sundowner

Featuring one of the most unique and insane action sequences I’m seen on television, “Sundowner” finally fills in Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) and the audience on just what he’s been carrying around inside his gut these past few weeks. Learning just what Genesis is, the byproduct of a forbidden union between and angel and a demon, Jesse at first seems willing to let DeBlanc (Tom Brooke) and Fiore (Anatol Yusef) remove it from him. And then the seraphim (Audrey Walters) shows up for a bat-shit crazy motel battle that leaves angel bodies strewn everywhere and Jesse with serious doubts that giving back his new gift is the right thing to do.

Along with cluing us in on what Jesse is carrying, “Sundowner” (named for a motel room which no maid will ever be able to properly clean) continues to question the morality of Jesse’s work. The Mayor (Ricky Mabe) alludes the the situation caused by Jesse’s plan bringing up a question of differentiating between God’s voice and your own for which the preacher’s answers should give Jesse pause concerning his own actions. Even Eugene (Ian Colletti), who has finally found some small measure of peace in the hell that is high school, questions the preacher’s methods. Faith and forgiveness must be chosen, but not where Jesse and Genesis are concerned. It will be interesting to see how Eugene’s abrupt disappearance effects Jesse’s plans.

Tulip (Ruth Negga) and Emily (Lucy Griffiths) are given their own subplot in the episode are given their own subplot as Tulip’s attempt to make up for her spur-of-the-moment actions result in an unlikely friendship between the pair. Tulip and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) also discover their one-night tryst could have larger ramifications than either one of them expected.
