Remington Steele - Tempered Steele television review

Today’s Throwback Thursday post takes us back to the 80s detective show Remington Steele. The second episode of the series, “Tempered Steele,” will introduce several themes which will become staples over the show’s run. First, Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) will become increasingly frustrated with the man now posing as Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan). Steele will also make wrong assumptions about a case, and his interference will at times both hinder and help the investigation.

The second episode of the series doesn’t color much outside of the lines as the episode continues to stay well within the template set in the series’ Pilot episode (including playing on Steele’s love of movie trivia and questionable methods). Hired to protect an electronics firm research, things aren’t easy sailing for the detectives. First, Steele’s anger at having his expense account shut-off causes him to break-up a sting involving Laura. And after having one of his convict pals set-up an impenetrable security system, which is quickly hacked, the case will become personal when Steele’s friend (the primary suspect in the robbery) turns up dead. We get more bickering and unresolved sexual tension between the detectives, and even a polo match, before the theft and murder are eventually solved. Murphy Michaels (James Read) and secretary Bernice Foxe (Janet DeMay) both return in supporting roles.
