Rick and Morty - The Rickshank Redemption TV review

In a surprise move, Cartoon Network decided to air the Third Season premiere of Rick and Morty on April 1st. And they kept airing it, over and over, causing more than a few viewers to wonder what the hell was going on and why new episodes for a show viewers had been waiting more than a decade to see was preempted by one fans had been waiting a few months for. Detaching my disappointment for no Samurai Jack (grrr….), I’ll admit that “The Rickshank Redemption” is a bizarrely good time as Rick (Justin Roiland) breaks out of prison and rescues Summer (Spencer Grammer) and Morty (Roiland) from the Citadel of Ricks by body-swapping his way through an ingenious plan that leaves bodies everywhere (and Rick sadly without the ability to improv).

Half the episode is spent on an elaborate ruse by Rick to screw over the Galactive Federation (featuring special guest-star Nathan Fillon), while another chunk focuses on Summer attempting to save her grandfather and Morty arguing quite strongly that Rick isn’t worth saving. This culminates into Morty shooting Rick in the head, not knowing he was helping out his grandfather’s mad plans to destroy the Citadel of Ricks. I’ll be curious to see what lingering effects such a move may have on Morty, how dark will this season get, … and will Rick be successful and get his hands on Szechuan sauce?
