Samurai Jack - Episode IX television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the adventures of the time-displaced samurai and his quest to make his way home. A fisherman’s tall tale sends Jack (Phil LaMarr) to the ocean in search of a secret underwater city called Oceanus where legend says a time portal exists capable of taking him home. Jack discovers not only are the legends of the city’s existence is true but is the home to a race known as the Triseraquins who, despite their hatred of Aku (Mako) and the hospitality they offer the samurai, have made an arrangement to turn Jack over to Aku.

The episode is notable for the underwater design, the Triseraquins, and Jack’s joyous reaction to discovering a familiar delicacy. As we have seen in previous episodes, and others to come, once again the world’s evil overlord has led his enemy into a trap. Only the villain’s refusal to keep his word and return the city to the surface spurs the Triseraquins into action to save our hero from a watery grave. Although Jack and the Triseraquins work together to send Aku running, his new friends are ashamed to admit the story of the time machine was a lie to lure the samurai into Aku’s clutches. Our hero’s journey continues.
