Second Chance - When You Have to Go There, They Have to Take You In

Following last week’s reveal that Mary (Dilshad Vadsaria) has been cured of the cancer that was slowly killing her thanks to the blood transfusions of the resurrected Jimmy (Robert Kazinsky), Second Chance begins on working on a new central conflict to keep the story going. After all, now that Jimmy isn’t needed as a donor what’s to keep him tied to Lookinglass other than the slow-burning physical attraction between Jimmy and Mary? After previously revealing Connor Graff (Adan Canto) to be a snake out to steal the company’s secrets, “When You Have to Go There, They Have to Take You In” begins to fill in that storyine which ties the existence of not one but two other resurrected people to Graff.

Jimmy and Duval (Tim DeKay) do their uncomfortable buddy cop team-up on a serial killer case in the murder-of-the-week. Not only do we discover the killer is a resurrected man Graff brought back but we also see Graff’s men taking desperate measures to prevent anything ever being tied back to their boss. The big reveal of the week, however, doesn’t have to deal with Graff’s Frankenstein monster but instead Alexa (Vanessa Lengies) who is also a resurrected soul and needs Graff’s help to give her elderly husband (Francis X. McCarthy) a second chance as well. Of course since Otto’s (Adhir Kalyan) process is far more reliable than Graff’s I’m not sold on why Alexis would betray the Goodwins to a man who may never be able to properly master the technique she requires.

There are several problematic pieces to “When You Have to Go There, They Have to Take You In.” First, Lengies doesn’t come off at any time as an old soul in a younger body. Nor does it seem plausible that she could hide her condition (and need to return to her own tank) in a position with responsibilities that would seem to preclude her from making such a visit on schedule. The show’s (already ridiculous premise) begins to cave in under the weight of the soap-operatic conspiracies and backhanded deals. That said, the episode still does have some fun moments, including Jimmy running into Gracie (Ciara Bravo) who is increasingly curious at just what her “uncle” is hiding.
