Sleepy Hollow - Bad Blood

As the season finale begins Ichabod Crane’s (Tom Mison) good mood at finding some suitable clothing at a Revolutionary War reenactment is short-lived when the Sin Eater (John Noble) shares his vision to Crane, Abbie (Nicole Beharie), and Jenny Mills (Lyndie Greenwood) of Moloch raising the second Horseman on the anniversary of Abbie and Jenny’s first encounter with the demon during an eclipse 13 years ago. In need of a witch to stop War from literally descending on the town, Crane plans to use the map of ley lines he memorized from Washington’s map and walk into Purgatory to save Katrina (Katia Winter) and bring her home. And, despite Jenny’s objections, Abbie refuses to let him go alone.

Awakening in Purgatory to a dreamlike vision, Abbie sees both Sheriff Corbin (Clancy Brown) and Andy Brooks (John Cho) still alive, and Ichabod finds himself back in his own time surrounded by friends and family including the disapproving father (Victor Garber) who cast him out after Crane chose to join the Revolutionary Army. Surviving temptation, the pair are reunited in less sunny surroundings surrounded by lost souls searching for salvation. Finally finding Katrina, the witnesses are faced with an entire new kind of temptation when Crane learns his wife can only leave Purgatory if another remains to take her place.

With Abbie remaining in Purgatory (and learning a terrible truth from her younger self), Crane and Katrina searching for the site of War’s arrival in this realm, and Captain Irving (Orlando Jones) arrested for murder, Jenny tries to work her way through Corbin’s tapes and retracing the fallen sheriff’s footsteps to find the final piece of the puzzle only to come face-to-stump with the Headless Horseman before she can share her discovery.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the truth about War, what Abbie and Jenny saw all those years ago, and the true motivations (and true identity) of someone they believed to be an ally lead the two witnesses to be separated at the most crucial moment as War takes his rightful place alongside the other Horseman. Although the monster of the week formula provided some ups and downs, the show delivers a finale with an expected level of dread and betrayal while leaving quite a bit of work for Crane to do to save his friend, his wife, and his new home, when the show returns next Fall along with possible longterm changes should Jenny and Katrina both become full-time members of Abbie and Crane’s mission.
