The Flash - The Runaway Dinosaur

With the Flash (Grant Gustin) trapped inside the Speed Force his friends and family are left to deal with the consequences of the experiment to restore his speed. While Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) recovers quickly from being knocked unconscious from the controlled particle-accelerator explosion, Jesse Quick (Violett Beane) languishes in an unexplained coma just as Barry once did (suggesting her foray into super-speed crime-fighting may come before Wally’s). Aside from trying to lure Barry back from the limbo he’s trapped in, his friends also must deal with zombified Girder (Greg Finley) whose form was reanimated by the shockwave.

Visited by aspects of the Speed Force taking on the appearance of Joe (Jesse L. Martin), Iris (Candice Patton), Henry (John Wesley Shipp), and his mother Nora (Michelle Harrison), Barry will be forced to come to terms with his own guilt while learning to fully embrace his role as the Flash. On its surface “The Runaway Dinosaur” feels like a filler episode, prolonging the Flash’s battle with Zoom (Teddy Sears) for another week. That said, the episode sets up quite a bit for the future. Not only does it confirm that the Speed Force is sentient, Barry’s time away from Earth finally allows him to properly grieve his mother’s death and his choice not to save her last season. Returning with his speed, and a better appreciation for his gift, we’ll have to see how the returned Flash matches up to Zoom and his meta-human army in the season’s remaining two episodes.
