The Mentalist - Grey Water

As Jane (Simon Baker) and Fischer (Emily Swallow) investigate a murder at a fracking site, Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) and Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) become official consultants of the FBI following the murders of Oscar Ardiles (David Norona) and LaRoche (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and an attempt on Rigsby’s life in their home. On Jane’s recommendation the group narrows their suspect list to a select few including Richard Haibach (William Mapother), Linus Wagner (Zeljko Ivanek), and John Hutton (Paul Schulze).

As Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and the team work to try and whittle down the suspect pool, slowly eliminating them one-by-one until only Hutton and Haibach remain, Jane gets up to his old tricks by gaslighting a murderer into revealing his stolen loot and confessing to the murder. The discovery of what Hutton was really doing while sneaking off from his FBI surveillance narrows the pool down to a single suspect.

The return of some of the old guest-stars and the recent deaths of Ardiles and LaRoche, make the ongoing story far more interesting than the murder of the week (which is fine but hardly memorable). The episode ends on cliffhanger with Van Pelt targeted as the killer’s next victim (although the preview for next week’s episode suggests Van Pelt was kidnapped rather than killed like the first two victims).
