On a whim, King Louis (Ryan Gage) orders Athos (Tom Burke), Aramis (Santiago Cabrera), Porthos (Howard Charles), and D’Artagnan (Luke Pasqualino) to take him out on the town under the guise of a common man to see how the little people live. What starts out as an enjoyable night at a local pub becomes something far more sinister when Louis and D’Artagnan are both snatched during a bar fight by slavers unaware just how precious their cargo truly is.
Continuing a theme used in the season premiere, “An Ordinary Man” leaves the King frustrated with his Musketeers through no fault of their own and ingratiates the Rochefort (Marc Warren) a little more with the throne. Never admitting his own foolishness caused the accident, and choosing to go back on his word with one of the villains who switched sides to help his King, Louis blames D’Artagnan and the Musketeers (those who rescued him) for the entire affair. Rochefort and Milady (Maimie McCoy) both use the situation for their own advantage as the threat of the King’s demise allows the advisor to lead Queen Anne (Alexandra Dowling) to a questionable decision and Milady makes sure the King is made aware of her help in arranging his escape (from slavers she was working with).
Although the Spanish don’t get the prize of killing Louis and installing his infant son on the throne, bringing France one-step closer to Spain, the unsent letter Rochefort entreats the Queen to write remains in his position suggesting that the villain may use it when it best serves his purposes. The episode also continues Aramis’ noticeable interest in the prince which he attempts to disguise by bedding the boy’s governess Marguerite (Charlotte Salt), but the longer the storyline goes the more potential danger he threatens to bring down on the Queen and heir to the throne.
