White Collar - Diamond Exchange

As the show itself has pointed out, Neal‘s (Matt Bomer) attempt at reform means nothing until the power is put entirely in his hands, his anklet is removed, and the choice to go legitimate or return to his life of crime is put in his hands and his hands alone. Leading into the final commercial break of White Collar‘s Fifth Season’s finale (which if you are counting is one full year longer than Neal’s actual sentence) it appeared for an instant the show was ready to force some hard choices on Neal and Peter (Tim DeKay) as both had achieved everything they could have hoped for through their partnership. And in the last five minutes everything quickly falls apart as the show sets up one of its trademark cliffhangers leading into next season and what I expect, after a couple of episodes tying up loose ends, will be the return of the status quo.

With Mozzie (Willie Garson) poisoned, Neal and Peter play National Treasure to recover the diamond from its hiding place inside a 200 year-old Free Mason structure, Elizabeth (Tiffani Thiessen) heads to the hospital to console the hallucinating Mozzie, and Diana (Marsha Thomason) and Jones (Sharif Atkins) work together to try and discern what poison will likely kill the conspiracy theorist who only has a few hours left to live.

By the end of the episode Peter and Elizabeth are on their way to DC, Mozzie is on the mend, and Neal has earned the removal of his anklet for the capture of Rebecca (Bridget Regan) and the recovery of the diamond. He even gets a little closure with Rebecca after double-crossing her but before sending her to prison. However, happy moments at White Collar Division hardly ever last. Neal’s freedom is axed by Peter’s superiors who don’t wish to lose such a valuable asset, Peter begins second-guessing leaving the Division (which will put a strain on his marriage), and Neal (with his freedom revoked and rethinking his vow to go straight) is kidnapped by a group who have their own plans for Mr. Caffrey. I’d say there’s going to be quite a bit to work through when the show returns for its Sixth Season.
