Our 2007 Fall Preview into the idiot box we both hate and love continues. The good news, this week brings back one of the best shows on television It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (season three premieres tonight!), a bunch of new shows including Kelsey Grammer’s return to TV, a cop show set in New Orleans, and a new show based on a series of teen novels. The bad news, there’s this load of “reality”-TV as well including returning shows like America’s Top Model, Beauty and the Geek, and the new pseudo-reality show Nashville. We examine all this and more in the Full Diagnosis.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – If there’s ever a show that’s been wrong in all the right ways it’s this one. The gang returns for a third season of mischief and mayhem. One of the best and underappreciated shows on television. Check out the DVD review for Seasons 1&2 (available now). The show airs Thursday nights at 10:00/9:00 on FX.
Nashville – The folks behind Laguna Beach try their hands on this new “docu-soap” about a group of young hopefuls in Nashville, Tennessee. Really? How much “pseudo-reality TV” does one culture need? The show airs Friday nights at 9:00/8:00 on FOX.
Prison Break – The FOX series from exec producer Brett Ratner moves into its third season with the group’s attempt to break out of a Panamanian prison. The show airs on Monday nights at 8:00/7:00 on FOX.
K-Ville – Set in post-Katrina New Orleans this new cop drama focuses on the officers determined to clean up the town and bring back Katrinaville to its former glory. Cole Hauser, Anthony Anderson, Blake Shields, Tawny Cypress, and John Carroll Lynch star. The series airs Monday nights at 9:00/8:00 on FOX.
Beauty and the Geek – The CW returns this crapfest “reality”-TV show forcing together geeks and spoiled girls but Veronica Mars gets the axe? Yeah, there’s a smart creative decision. The show airs Tuesday nights at 9:00/8:00 on the CW.
Kid Nation – Forty kids are given “complete” control to create their own nation “free” of adult supervision (yeah, so who’s holding the cameras?). Cute, if flawed, idea, but I’m betting against everything going all Lord of the Flies (at least until sweeps). The show airs Wednesday nights at 8:00/7:00 on CBS.
America’s Top Model – – The show returns with a new group of girls for yet another season. Seriously, how long can they keep this title when none of the “winners” ever become top models? The show airs Wednesday nights at 8:00/7:00 on the CW.
Back to You – Kelsey Grammer returns to television in this new sitcom with Patricia Heaton as co-anchors who reunite at a Pittsburgh TV station. Fred Willard, Ayda Field, and Ty Burrell also star. The show airs Wednesday nights at 8:00/7:00 on FOX.
‘Til Death – A pair of newlyweds (Kat Foster, Eddie Kaye Thomas) move in next door to a couple married for 25 years (Brad Garrett, Joely Fisher). What is it about new couples, middle-aged couples and old couples mixing it up together that’s got all the networks racing to produce sitcoms all based on the same weak premise? A few years ago there wasn’t a single show on with this set-up; now there are a half-dozen! The show airs Wednesday nights at 8:30/7:30 on FOX.
Gossip Girl – Based on the young teen novels the show follows a group of privileged teens who attend an elite private school in New York City. Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford, Taylor Momsen, Penn Badgley, Kelly Rutherford, and Ed Westwick, (with the lovely Kristen Bell providing the voice of the unseen blogging narrator). The show airs Wednesday nights at 9:00/8:00 on the CW.
