Sports Night

  • Title: Sports Night – The Complete Series
  • tv.com: link

sports-night-dvdIf you blinked at the end of the last millennium you probably missed Sports Night.  The brainchild of Aaron Sorkin hit the ABC airwaves in the fall of 1998.  Although critically acclaimed, it won many awards including three Emmys, the show never really hit it big (especially compared to The West Wing).

As his second show became a huge success, this first foray into television slowly faded into syndication.  The tagline for the show was:  It’s a show about a show about sports, that isn’t about sports at all.  I would be hard pressed to sum it up better.  An extremely well written high paced workplace comedy that is filled with kinetic energy, big laughs, snappy dialogue and one hell of a great cast.  I only wish it could have run for more than two seasons.

The Apology

Here’s a clip from the show’s second episode, appropriately entitled “The Apology.”  After an interview in which he refers to his opinion in favor of legalizing marijuana, Dan (Josh Charles) is forced to give an on the air apology; the result however shocks everyone.  Larger version available in the Full Diagnosis.

Ainsley Hayes

One of my favorite recurring characters on The West Wing was Ainsley Hayes (Emily Procter).  Although she only appeared in one season she had many memorable moments including her first debate with Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) on Capital Beat.  A larger version is available in the Full Diagnosis along with clips of Ainsley singing “Blame It On the Bossa Nova,” arguing with Sam about the ERA, meeting the President, meeting and discussing duty with Lionel Tribbey (John Larroquette) and more!

The Disaster Show

Here are a couple clips from “The Disaster Show.”  First up, guest host Allison Janey performs a cold open without cue cards in front of a live audience.  Larger version available in the Full Diagnosis along with Harriet (Sarah Paulson) trying desperately, and failing miserably, to tell a simple joke.
