Shout Out

Veronica Mars herself, Kristen Bell, made her first appearance on NBC’s Heroes this week.  Here’s a quick clip of her performance and an interview with Ms. Bell about her character (larger version available in the Full Diagnosis).  Now the reason I’m sharing with this with you (since you know I’ve been critical of the show) is to give a RF Shout Out to Lane Brown and Dan Kois of New York Magazine’s Vulture who quip “Bell’s spiky vulnerability has been replaced by whininess and smart-assitude.  When Veronica Mars gets written by the Heroes writers, she sheds subtext and depth, as if Willow unexpectedly paid a visit to the girls on Charmed.”  Damn, that’s so good I wish I had said it!  Read the entire article here.

Serenity: The Lunch Box (and more!)

Fans of Joss Whedon’s shortlived (but much beloved) Firefly series can now take their lunch to work in a Serenity Lunch Box (or the alternative Fruity Bar Lunch Box) starting next March.  Other cool ‘verse themed items include a Zippo lighter, a Serenity X-Mas ornament, and a three peice PVC set.  Fans might also want to set aside some cash for the hardcover collection of Whedon’s Serenity: Those Left Behind which fills in the gap between the series final episode and the film.  For a full list of available items click here.  Larger image of the lunch boxes avialable in the Full Diagnosis.

Comic Movie News

Following in X-Men‘s footsteps DC has decided to make a film starring their own super-group, The Justice League of America.  Hold your inner-nerd in check though as early casting rumors sound more like a Bizarro world adventure than a kick ass film.  Early names include Tyrese Gibson (for John Stewart, what no Hal Jordan! Somebody gonna’ die!!) and Ryan Reynolds for the Flash (mmm, maybe).  More news (plus the version of the league I want to see on film) inside the Full Diagnosis.  You’ll know more when we do!

Other actors called into screen test include Bijou Philips (Hawkgirl, maybe?) and Tad Hamilton (might make an okay Jonah Hex, oops he’s not part of the league!).  George Miller (Babe: Pig in the City, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) is set to direct the script being written by relative newcommers Kieran Mulroney and Michelle Mulroney whose only credits include the yet to be released Mirrors.  (Really?  Just giving the script to anybody?  Damn, Aaron and I could have done it!!)  Is it just me or is this sounding more like a very special episode of Smallville than a feature film?  From these inauspiscous beginings it seems they’ve got quite a bit of work to do to live up to the animated series.  Also unclear so far is what version of the JLA this film will use (there have been more than a few).  Here’s the version of the league I want to see on film.  You’ll know more when we do!

After three Wolverine and the X-Men movies they finally decided to just make one without those other guys.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine returns Hugh Jackman to the title role in a prequel of sorts.  Gavin Hood (Rendition, Tsotsi), and not Brett Ratner, has been chosen to direct the script in the works from David Benioff (Stay, Troy).  Early reports hint the inclusion of a young William Stryker, Sabertooth, and the Weapon X program.  Rumors are already flying that Liev Schreiber is in talks to play Stryker (Brian Cox played the role in X2).  The film is tentatively set for a May 2009 release.  You’ll know more when we do!
