Prince Caspian

  • Title: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
  • IMDB: link

“You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember.”

chronicles-narnia-prince-caspian-posterThe film begins with the exile of Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), the rightful heir to the throne of Narnia.  His uncle (Sergio Castellitto), whose wife has finally given him a male heir, takes the opportunity to seize control of the kingdom.

In his flight Caspian blows the magic horn (your joke here) which calls the “great kings and queens of the past” back to Narnia.  And so the Pevensie children, Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), are magically transported from a London subway to the beaches of Narnia.

Narnia is quite different than they remember as thousands of years have past and the magical animals and creatures now live in fear of the human invaders which have driven them into seclusion in the woods.  Now Peter and the rest of his clan must help put Caspian back on the throne and give back Narnia to the Narnians, that is if they can stop bickering among themselves.

Quote of the Week

Our quote today comes from comic artist Alex Ross, co-creator of Astro City and artist for Kingdom Come.  Aside from his art Ross has earned a special spot in my heart for his love of Captain Marvel and his flat-out refusal to draw Kyle Rayner into his DC work (take that Ron Marz!).  This quote comes from Ross’ current work on the Avengers/Invaders:

“Marvel’s continuity is, in my opinion, the most exciting involving soap opera structure in comics today.”

House of Mystery

  • Title: House of Mystery #1
  • Comic Vine: link

“The moment of epiphany, that slice of time when you stand on the brink of a new life is one of the most magical, most terrifying, most intoxicating experiences there is.”

house-of-mystery-1-cover

The House of Mystery was a horror anthology which ran on and off for decades.  Events centered around a house and it’s caretaker Cain and the stories of horror and mayhem told within.  This recent re-launch by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges centers around those trapped in th house (including quite a few familiar faces to the Vertigo line) who are forced to tell tales to earn their keep.

After a short appearance by Cain and his brother Abel (with a hatchet firmly stuck in his chest) the story moves to young Miss Kelle who is being chased by two mysterious figures and eventually will find herself stepping into the house which has haunted her dreams – The House of Mystery.

Intercut with Keele’s run across town is the tale of one of the patrons, Hungry Sally, who pays for her meal with the disturbing tale of her life entitled “The Hollows” which is a brutal tale you might not wish to read on a full stomach involving human-sized fly creatures and the events which earned Sally her name.

Tokyo Godfathers

  • Title: Tokyo Godfathers
  • IMDB: link

It’s funny how a child can bring people closer together, and pull them from the depths of desperation.  In the movie Tokyo Godfathers, by the same person of Paprika and Millennium Actress, three homeless friends happen to be in the right place at the right time.

One Christmas eve, the three friends were digging through some trash for presents for one another when they discovered an abandoned infant.  The child was crying, cold and hungry, so the three did the right thing and took it in for the night.
