Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist #1

flash-gordon-zeitgeist-1-coverDynamite Entertainment brings a new version of Flash Gordon back to comics. Although when I say new, this version of Flash seems to have quite a bit in common with the 1980 film by starring Sam J. JonesMax von SydowMelody Anderson, Timothy Dalton, Ornella Muti, and Brian Blessed.

The comic opens with a bored Ming the Merciless deciding to toy with the planet of Earth. From their we’re given a plane crash that Flash Gordon and Dale Arden survive only to be kidnapped by Hans Zarkov and taken into space in his rocket ship.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? However there are some differences including the fact the story doesn’t take place in the 80’s or the present, but in the era of Nazi Germany, and Hitler (believe it or not) will play a major role. It also introduces characters not seen in the film in its final pages such as the Lion Men of Mongo.

castle-cuffed

It took the better part of four seasons but Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) finally wake up together. Of course their current predicatment probably isn’t what Castle had in mind. The pair groggily come to, drugged and handcuffed in the killer’s lair, with no escape and only vague memories of how they got there.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-4-coverMore pieces of the Turtles’ origins are revealed as Leonardo, Michelangelo and Donatello finally locate their long lost brother Raphael. By the end of the issue, and the first arc of the reboot Turtles comic series, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be united once more.

Issue #4 is heavy on action as most of the events unfold during, and directly following, a battle between Raphael and Casey Jones and Old Hob‘s gang. The two are hopelessly outnumbered, but lucky for them the other turtles show up to lend a hand (and a katana, and numchucks, and kicks to the face).

We’ll have to wait and see how this new version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles weaves April O’Neil and other characters like the Shredder further into the comic, but for a first arc it’s been a fun ride. Now let’s see what kind of trouble the turtles can get into now that they’ve been reunited. And, if you can find it, I’d definitely recommend picking up the variant cover by Turtle co-creator Kevin Eastman. Worth a look.
