News and Notes – The End of Leverage?

LeverageIn an open letter to fans of the show, Leverage co-creator Dean Devlin discusses the future of the TNT drama which still has not been renewed by the network to return for a sixth season. This means the remaining three episodes of the show’s Fifth Season, culminating in the season finale which airs on Christmas Day, may very well be the show’s series finale as well. The bad news is it looks like there’s a good chance Leverage is going away. The good news is, with foreknowledge that this could be a possibility, the producers put the original concept for show’s final arc of the series in place for this season. This means if the show is going out (which I certainly hope isn’t the case) at least it’s going out on its own terms and exactly as the show’s creators originally envisioned. You can find the full letter inside.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #16

tmnt-16-coverPicking up where the last issue left off, our heroes in a half-shell fight off the mutated snapping turtle Slash, who has escaped from Stockton Laboratories and is performing the task which he was trained and programmed to do – hunt down and destroy the Turtles.

There’s plenty of action here as the fight with Slash takes most of the issue, while intercut with other stories involving Krang‘s displeasure with the Neutrinos in Dimension X and a worried Casey and April looking for their long overdue friends.

The conclusion of the issue leaves Leonardo with some heavy soul searching and Michelangelo loosing another friend to the Turtles’ dangerous lifestyle as well as a new team-up that could cause serious trouble for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when an injured Slash is found by their enemy Old Hob. Worth a look.

Hitchcock

“And that, madame, is why the call me ‘The Master of Suspense.'”

hitchcock-posterBased on the book by Stephen Rebello, director Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock is more centered on director Alfred Hitchcock‘s personal life and the enormous stress of his widely unpopular decision to follow up North by Northwest with Psycho than the actual filming of the movie. The result is insanely well-cast and immensely enjoyable study of the famous director and the most important woman in his life, his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).

The film succeeds beyond my expectations on the strength of three terrific performances. Hopkins, no stranger to throwing on prosthetics to play a larger than life historical figure (Nixon), is transformed into the famous director who is equal parts genius and spoiled child. Mirren is perfect as the loyal wife, who has never gotten her due for being Hitchcock’s most trusted collaborator, who simply wants to spend a little time with a charming old friend (Danny Huston) working on a new project. And Scarlett Johansson brings more than just a pretty face to her portrayal of Psycho actress Janet Leigh who never loses her professionalism even when the director crosses the line.

Despite Diggle’s (David Ramsey) objections, Oliver (Stephen Amell) gets romantically involved with Helena (Jessica De Gouw) and begins training her to be a crossbow-wielding Starling City vigilante known as the Huntress.  Together the pair take down another name on Oliver’s list,  a crack dealer who works for Helena’s father, but  his influence, which isn’t helped by an awkward double-date with Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Merlyn (Colin Donnell), can’t stop her from starting a gang war by killing the leader of the Triad to weaken her father (Jeffrey Nordling) and make the mob boss pay for the death of her fiance.
