The Sleepover

The Sleepover movie reviewThe Sleepover is an innocuous exercise that attempts to blend a teen comedy about a pair of siblings (Sadie Stanley and Maxwell Simkins) and their friends (Cree Cicchino and Lucas Jaye) getting into trouble while saving their parents from ninjas with a bland heist storyline involving the kids’ cliche of a suburbs father (Ken Marino) discovering his wife (Malin Akerman) is a world-class thief with an ex-fiance (Joe Manganiello) who has been living in witness protection for 15 years and is now being blackmailed into one more heist by her former partners. Got that?

The film by Trish Sie and first-time screenwriter Sarah Rothschild is an unimaginative and forgettable affair that tries to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible without actually entertaining anyone. I feel sorry for both Akerman and especially Marino, who tries his best to make the insufferable Ron funny, for not being able to turn down such a lazy affair. The wacky kid segments have a bit more going for them, but there’s nothing you haven’t seen done far better countless times before. The Sleepover is so forgettable you might end turning off the television halfway through because you forgot you were watching it.

Warrior Nun - Isaiah 30:20-21 television review

Ava (Alba Baptista) and Shotgun Mary (Toya Turner) become unlikely road companions after the encounter with a demon as an injured Mary leads Ava to a nearby village where the Order help some years before. There’s Odd Couple some humor in the opening sequence as Mary tracks Ava down, gently pushes her towards a nearby town, and becomes her travelling companion. The pair’s time together allows Mary to offer Ava the soft pitch to joining the order while also giving the younger woman a sense of her importance and how her control over the Halo gives her leverage and power. Disconnected from the various other characters and subplots, “Matthew 7:13” offers a nice break while also allowing Ava to see the positive effects of those who have been helped by the warrior nuns.

The Umbrella Academy - Valhalla television review

For the first time in the show’s Second Season the entire Umbrella Academy is gathered under the same roof. It doesn’t last very long as Luther (Tom Hopper) is the first to bail on the disagreements on how the team can prevent the end of the world in six days time. Following his brother out, Diego (David Castañeda) and Luther receive an invitation from Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) to all of his “pursuers” summoning them for a light supper (and laying the foundation for the next episode). During the opening sequence, we also get to see a little more of Pogo‘s past and how his path original coincided with that of Hargreeves.
