morning-glories-18-cover“P.E.” continues, and although we don’t get any answers about the school and its mysterious ways we do learn a little about Abraham‘s group working against Morning Glories Academy. The issue is centered around Jun (really Hisao) who gets into another fight with his brother Hisao (really Jun) but is rescued by a childhood fried, Guillame.

As Guillame and Jun reconnect and kill time in a way that would be sure to make Bill O’Reilly shout down the evil homosexual comic book agenda of Image Comics, we also get flashbacks to Jun and Guillame’s time together as children growing up in Abraham’s compound.

Although the issue doesn’t really move the plot forward it does cement a couple of important points (other than Jun’s sexual preference). One, we know Jun isn’t alone working for Abraham. And two, we discover which other member of the new Morning Glories recruits is not only part of the group but in charge of their mission. It’s not who you expect. Worth a look.

Morning Glories #17

morning-glories-17-coverThis issue returns us to the mysterious cave, this time from the perspective of Jade and Ike who wait and fight over the state of things while waiting for Casey and Ms. Hodge to miraculously disappear.

In terms of action Morning Glories #17 is decidedly lacking. However, in terms of actually allowing two characters to sit down and honestly discuss their views and question the odd occurrences at Morning Glories Academy this is the best issue yet.

We learn a little more about Jade’s past, the death of her mother, and how she views her ability to peer into the future. Despite Ike’s bravado and cynical taunts, he does manage to raise a couple of important points about Jade’s view of herself and the school. We’re also, quite unexpectedly, given a rather large hint at the identity of the mysterious ghost.

A strong issue, and a darn good read, that actually answers some questions as well as continues the mystery. Worth a look.

Morning Glories #16

This month’s issue picks up the thread’s of issue #13 (from way back in October) as we finally learn a little more about what happened to Casey and Miss Hodge. The final panels of the earlier issue are true, the pair have traveled back into the past, but far further than Miss Hodge had planned.

Casey comes face-to-face with a father who doesn’t recognize her (his daughter is only three years-old and safe at home in bed), and has to deal with torture, shock, and an understanding that her life has been turned completely upside-down (even more so than her time at Morning Glories Academy).

The issue works pretty well. I’d like a little more explanation in how Miss Hodge enforces her will on others, and how Casey has the same ability. Is it a natural talent, until now untapped? Or is this something Hodge granted her? In either case a little clarity (which I’ll admit is asking quite a bit from this comic) would have been nice.

Morning Glories #15

morning-glories-15-coverIn the latest issue of Morning Glories Zoe takes center stage and makes a solid case why she might be the most screwed-up member of the freshman class (which, at this school, is saying something!) as the Wood Run storyline continues.

Zoe and Hunter work together to capture their flag, stopping to make camp and to give Zoe a chance for a not-so-comforting lecture the impossibility of a Hunter and Casey relationship. Along the way Hunter meets a new friend who not only has high nerd cred but a pretty obvious crush on Hunter as well. It’s too bad, given the shocking final panels, things between them will never work out.

Once again writer Nick Spencer and artist Joe Eisma give us another weird, but highly entertaining tale, and a terrific value. At an age when content seems to be shrinking as more and more monthly comics seem hellbent on a $4 price-tag, here’s 30 pages of (very good) story for $3. That’s pretty awesome, if you ask me. Worth a look.

Morning Glories #14

morning-glories-14-coverIt looks like we’ll have to wait at least a month to find out what exactly has happened with Casey and Miss Hodge. In the latest issue we see the fallout from Hunter‘s blow-up with Zoe from her point of view, intermixed with the beginning of Woodrun, and odd flashbacks to Pilgrims torturing a man to get information out of girl who bears a resemblace to Jade in the year 1653.

In a nice move, writer Nick Spencer chooses to give Zoe a moment to actually feel the hurt of Hunter’s comments, and the overheard gossiping of the other girls before returning to full bitch mode and deciding on a slow revenge.

For an issue centered around arguably the series most unlikable character, this one turns out to be pretty good. I liked how the Pilgrim story eventually worked itself around to the main tale. We see a little of Woodrun from Zoe, Hunter and Jun‘s point of view but (not surprisingly) things turn ominous just as the comic comes to a close.

The mystery remains two-steps out of reach for the characters and audience alike, but I’m so enjoying the ride that (at least for now) I’m not too worried on the destination. Worth a look.
