Batman & the Outsiders #3

Batman & the Outsiders #3 comic reviewBatman & the Outsiders #3 is all about tests and loyalty. After taking Sofia Ramos, Ra’s al Ghul begins to condition the young woman and slowly bend her to his will. At the same time, rather than hunt for the girl, Batman puts the Outsiders through a test of his own whose true purpose is force Signal to face his guilt and stop running from it.

The lack of urgency on Batman’s behalf to rescue Sofia is highly perplexing, as is the fact that none of the Outsiders question the Dark Knight Detective taking them off the case for a training exercise while the young woman they failed to save is being brainwashed by a delusional madman.

Batman & the Outsiders #2

Batman & the Outsiders #2 comic reviewWith Sofia Ramos under the temporary care of Kaliber, Batman sends the Outsiders to reach the girl before the minions of Ra’s al Ghul can find her. Even with the timely arrival of the Outsiders as back-up, Kaliber can’t keep Ra’s acolyte Ishmael from Sofia who, given the chance to run, decides to stand her ground.

Batman & the Outsiders #2 certainly sells Ishmael as a legitimate threat who makes short work of the Outsiders and Kaliber. Once again DC can’t quite decide just how skilled to make Orphan, who (despite being pronounced the best fighter in the DCU during the current Rebirth continuity), is thrown away easily by Ra’s minion.

Batman & the Outsiders #1

Batman & the Outsiders #1 comic reviewDC Comics relaunches the Outsiders with Batman & the Outsiders #1 putting together a team of Black Lightning, Katana, Orphan, and Signal together under Batman‘s loose supervision. The first issue gives us a look at the team under Black Lightning’s command still struggling to come together in the field (with several characters struggling with their own issues).

The comic also introduces the team’s first mission as Batman sends the group after Sopia Ramos, the sole survivor of a secret organization Batman destroyed years before that hoped to create their own super-heroes. When her father is killed, Sofia’s powers are activated and she is hunted. The Outsiders aren’t the first to find her, but neither is Ra’s al Ghul (who apparently is behind the attack on the young woman and her father).
