Super Dinosaur

Super Dinosaur #22

Super Dinosaur #22The battle for the fate of the Dynamo Dome begins as Tyrannosaurus X and his dyno-soldiers invade just as Derek and Super Dinosaur make it back with the cure to bring Derek’s mother out her long coma and into a world that she may not be quite ready to face.

There’s plenty of action to be found here, along with a new suit of armor for Super Dinosaur, as all the residents take up arms (including Erika and Erin, and their parents) to kick the dinosaurs out of their homes. Fans waiting for an action-packed issue between Super Dinosaur and all of his various enemies will certainly get their money’s worth here.

Ending on a cliffhanger with Mega Raptor defeated, but the fate of Dynamo Dome still in doubt, Derek’s mother makes a dangerous choice that her son may never be able to forgive her for. It will be interesting to see how her actions, both immediate genocidal tendencies and future actions, will effect the dynamic of the book going forward. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #21

Super Dinosaur #21In need of a chemical to help revive his mother from her suspended animation, Derek Dynamo and Super Dinosaur head out on a stealth mission to break into one of Max Maximus‘ old safe houses (which has been taken over by Tyrannosaurus X and his army.

The choice of Derek and SD for a stealth mission is pretty questionable and provides some fun (Super Dinosaur’s reaction to being seen, Wheels’ new flight mode) and head-scratching moments (Super Dinosaur inexplicably falling asleep in the enemy base – unless this is foreshadowing something more ominous down the line).

Honestly anytime I find a Super Dinosaur comic I’m pleasantly surprised as the series release schedule has become incredibly inconsistent. Writer Robert Kirkman and artist Jason Howard have been putting out only a single issue of the monthly title every four months. Although there are a couple odd moments here, there’s still quite a bit of fun to be had. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #20

Super Dinosaur #20After a three-month hiatus Super Dinosaur returns with new toys for Derek Dynamo and his best bud Super Dinosaur and a new mission to find the right isotope needed from Max Maximus‘ former confederates which is the only possible cure for his mother’s coma.

With no word on the series for months I had wondered if it had been cancelled. Thankfully Derek and SD live to fight on another day as the latest issue dresses the pair as both ninja gear and spies – because if you’ve never seen a talking Tyrannosaurus Rex in a tux try to talk his way into an exclusive party you haven’t really lived.

While working diligently on finding a cure for his mother both Derek and his father let other problems slide as the issue’s B-story sets up the next arc when Tyrannosaurus-X liberates the Dino Men from Earthcore Headquarters and begins to set in motion his new villainous scheme. I’ve missed you Super Dinosaur, welcome back. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #19

Super Dinosaur #19Derek Dynamo and Super Dinosaur get their first taste of Tyrannosaurus X when the super-powered dinosaur version of Max Maximus battles the two heroes above the Statue of Liberty and all through New York City.

The pair have their hands full with a villain whose at least as smart as Derek and more powerful than Super Dinosaur. In terms of action Super Dinosaur #19 certainly delivers as the entire comic (aside from the scenes shown in Dynamo Dome) are all focused on the fight (and Tyrannosaurus X kicking our heroes butts).

Although Derek and SD win the day (with a little luck and a giant explosion from SD’s overloaded armor), the comic does a good job of setting up Tyrannosaurus X as a legitimate threat in a way that mad scientist Max Maximus never quite worked. Here’s hoping we see much more of the new super-villain in the coming months. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #18

Super Dinosaur #18The latest issue of Super Dinosaur gives us the destruction of Castle Maximus, the rescue of Julianna Dynamo, the capture of Max Maximus, and the birth of the series’ new villain Tyrannosaurus X (who is ever bit as awesome as his name would suggest).

The comic begins with the destruction of Maximus’ home base just as Super Dinosaur and his team were preparing their assault, putting all the heroes a bit on edge throughout the rest of the comic, particularly Derek who still can’t remember his mother even after the team finds her comatose body (possibly foreshadowing more twists to this story?).

The best part of Super Dinosaur #18 is the evolution of Minimus into the far more deadly threat of Tyrannosaurus X. Aside from looking pretty cool, the character’s unique match of brains and brawn gives the series a legitimate super-villain whose far more interesting, and threatening, than Maximus. His addition also pumps some new life into a comic that at times (despite it’s absurdly awesome premise) has felt a little stale. Worth a look.
