Charlie's Angels - Angels in Chains television review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday post takes us back to the tale of three beautiful former police detectives turned private detectives working for a faceless boss known as Charlie. To find out more about what happened to a young woman who went missing after being held on questionable charges in a rural county prison, Kelly (Jaclyn Smith), Jill (Farrah Fawcett), and Sabrina (Kate Jackson) get themselves arrested. What they find is a corrupt sheriff (David Huddleston) framing attractive young women and railroading them into prison without a trial. Once in the women’s prison, the ladies are put to hard work in fields, forced to deal with creepy guards (including Anthony James and Mary Woronov), and then dolled up for friends and suppliers of the prison to help “work off” their sentence.

There’s little justice for the Angels who spend most of the episode searching for answers and struggling to stay one-step ahead of the guards who eventually realize there is more to the inquisitive threesome than they first suspected. While it features some lighter moments, “Angels in Chains” is more harsh in tone than most of the series. Aside from the guards physically abusing our heroines, there are multiple scenes of intimidation and psychological pressure put to bear (along with the reveal of the attempted rape and murder of the woman the Angels were sent to find). The episode includes the Angels processed by the corrupt prison officials and, while chained together, running for their life to avoid summary execution by the sheriff. The Angels make their escape thanks to some quick thinking and a little luck (which includes the villains’ car exploding for no apparent reason).
