Charlie's Angels - Pilot television review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the tale of three beautiful former police detectives turned private detectives working for a faceless boss known as Charlie. The show’s “Pilot” sends the Angels to the California wine country to investigate the apparent death of a winery’s missing owner. The episode features not one but two Angels taking on the persona of the victim’s long lost daughter as both Kelly (Jaclyn Smith) and Sabrina (Kate Jackson) play the role of the missing heir in order to catch the killer. Poor Jill (Farrah Fawcett) gets the less meaty roles of secretary and swampland hick that help sell various aspects of the con.

The episode sets the baseline for the series in the role of the mysterious Charlie (who is always hosting beautiful women while the Angels risk their lives on the case of the week), how the Angels insert themselves undercover into their cases, and the thankless role of Bosley (David Doyle) acting as their support. The Angels’ plan falls apart at the last moment (something we’d see more than once over the course of the series), forcing the women to think on their feet and catch the bad guy before the credits roll. The episode also features David Ogden Stiers as another supporting player, but his role was dropped after the pilot and his character’s responsibilities were folded into Bosley’s character, and Tommy Lee Jones guest-starring as a friend of the woman both Kelly and Sabrina pretend to be.
