Justice League - Secret Origins television review

Our Throwback Tuesday post this week takes us back to the three-part opener of Justice League. When Earth is attacked by a strange alien force released from the graveyards of Mars, a group of heroes will band together to save the world. Along with Batman (Kevin Conroy) and Superman (George Newbern), both previously introduced on their own series, the team includes the Flash (Michael Rosenbaum), who was introduced in “Speed Demons,” and four new heroes in Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg), Hawkgirl (Maria Canals-Barrera), the Martian Manhunter (Carl Lumbly), and Green Lantern John Stewart (Phil LaMarr). While we’ll get to know more of each of them over the course of the series, we get concise introductions here that work well in framing each character and their spot on the team.

Powerful, and a little reminiscent of the tripods from The War of the Worlds and people being replaced by pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the Imperium are an unusual, if not the most interesting, villains that the series would put together for the Justice League to defeat. Still, the creatures do present a threat large enough to bring the heroes together, and stay together at Batman’s suggestion (even if he doesn’t accept a permanent position). It’s interesting that the opener also steals a bit from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, with an alien twist, as the nations of the world allow Superman to disable their nuclear arsenals.
