Pretty Little Liars - A Dark Ali

While Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Ezra (Ian Harding) both attempt to convince Alison (Sasha Pieterse) not to take A‘s bait and finger the man who has come forward to accept responsibility for her kidnapping (which never happened) along with the murders of Alison’s mother and Bethany Young, the other Liars worry about what exactly A has planned. Not able to convince the rest of the group to use Shana‘s (Aeriel Miranda) evidence of Alison’s movements during her supposed captivity, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) turns her attention back to Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) and the secrets under her own roof as the series offers another emotional scene between sisters who can’t quite bring themselves to trust each other with the truth.

Hanna‘s (Ashley Benson) attempt to have a normal high school experience leads her unexpectedly to an evening of surveillance with Mona (Janel Parrish) outside the police station. Although it feels a bit staged, the subplot walks back Mona’s recent mean streak reminding viewers of the scared young woman who has good reason to hate and fear Alison DiLaurentis. Meanwhile Lt. Tanner‘s (Roma Maffia) pushing eventually makes Ali crack and finger Cyrus (Jake Weary) who may not have done the crime he’s accused of but is certainly connected to Alison’s time away from Rosewood. Luckily for Cyrus he’s released from the 48-hour hold before the warrant for his arrest is issued.

Heading into next week’s summer finale, Alison’s decision does serious harm to her relationship with Emily who appears (finally) done with making excuses for Alison’s behavior. Alison’s actions also get an angered Emily on board with Spencer’s plan, although Aria (Lucy Hale) is far from convinced doing so won’t land her in prison. The episode ends teasing a few more breadcrumbs with Melissa taping a confession for her sister, A preparing to strike, and the reveal of the person responsible for bringing Cyrus to Rosewood and putting him up to confessing to a crime he didn’t commit.
