As Bones (Emily Deschanel) struggles to reassimilate to life both at home and work with Booth (David Boreanaz) after months on the run alone with her daughter, the Jeffersonian gets a new case involving the remains of a ruthless divorce lawyer who was beaten and set on fire.
Angela (Michaela Conlin) attempts to reassemble the dead lawyer’s shredded documents, Hodgins (T.J. Thyne), Finn (Luke Kleintank) and Dr. Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) search for a cause of death for a man who ate a rat before he was stabbed, beaten, and set on fire. The suspects include the man’s wife (Melissa Claire Egan) and his assistant (Alexandra Holden) who were having an affair, a divorced couple (Sophina Brown, Tom Gallop) who reconnected after a bitter divorce, and another former client (Drew Powell) who served the lawyer a rat burger once a week for two years.
While Bones uncovers the unusual method used for killing the victim at a construction site, and gets one of the show’s most humorous confessions, she’s far less able to reconnect with Booth who is still hurt from Bones’ time on the run and is uncomfortable with some of the changes Bones’ has undergone over her time away. But with a little help from Sweets (John Francis Daley), and some time alone talking with each other, the pair begin to get back on track.
Although I like the fact that the show spent some time over Bones and Booth readjusting to each other again after their time apart, the conclusion feels far too rushed. With things getting back to normal we get some fun in the lab, although Finn is still a weak substitute for some of Bones’ other far more interesting assistants such as Zack (Eric Millegan), Wendall (Michael Grant Terry), Vincent (Ryan Cartwright), Fisher (Joel David Moore), and Daisy (Carla Gallo).
