Creature from the Black Lagoon

  • Title: Creature from the Black Lagoon

Of all the classic Universal monsters, the Gill-man, also known simply as the Creature, was always my favorite. The plot of Creature from the Black Lagoon is pretty boilerplate with a group of scientists heading up the Amazon River looking the remainder of a fossilized skeleton of a fish man. Little do they know one of these creatures still exists. The setup works so well it would be copied by any number of horror movies for decades to come.

Hellboy in Love: Obsidian #1

The first-half of another “Hellboy in Love” story, Hellboy and Anastasia Bransfield head to Crete to investigate a recent dig that unearthed a tomb similar to what the pair found in India leading the back on the trail of the witch and the mysterious Suaren Artea society.

Hellboy in Love: Obsidian #1 offers another solid entry with much of the first-half of the issue continuing to showcase the two lovers together before the delve back into the supernatural begins. The banter between the pair, with the story set in 1980 and the couple having been together for several months, continues to be a highlight as Hellboy is often best when he has another character to play off of.  The more of these comics Dark Horse puts out the greater the foreboding of tragedy as we know, ultimately, however things end between Hellboy and the woman he loves it isn’t likely to be pleasant.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Monster of Nivola

Set in Sardinia in the 1960s, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Monster of Nivola is presented in the aftermath of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. taking out a local monster whose secret had been kept by the nuns of the region and whose death is mourned by an angry widow. Although we do get a flashback to Hellboy’s confused encounter with the creature, most of the comic takes place after events have already unfolded.
