Tim Burton’s stylish 1999 adaptation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” turns Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) from schoolteacher to constable sent to Sleepy Hollow by superiors tired of him spouting nonsense about using evidence, science, and logic to solve crimes. The small hamlet in upstate New York has had a series of recent murders, all decapitated by a figure on horseback who the locals believe to be the ghost of a Hessian mercenary in search of a head.

Feeling somewhat lost to time, 1986’s Haunted Honeymoon, directed and co-written by Gene Wilder, was an attempt at a comedy-chiller that teased fantastical elements for both Wilder and his wife Gilda Radner. The film was both a box office and critical failure, and while still available Blu-ray (if you can find it) the film isn’t available on any streaming platform. However, there’s something worth revisiting for me every now and then.

One of the many, many Jaws knockoffs, with a bit of Dr. Frankenstein mad scientist thrown in, 1999’s Deep Blue Sea was most notable for defying expectations and horror movie tropes in terms of expected deaths and survivors. It also provides some templates reused in Jurassic Park and its various sequels including an untimely storm and Thomas Jane as a sort of shark wrangler for a pack of killer creatures far smarter than their creators.

Of all the classic Universal monsters, the Gill-man, also known simply as the Creature, was always my favorite. The plot of Creature from the Black Lagoon is pretty boilerplate with a group of scientists heading up the Amazon River looking the remainder of a fossilized skeleton of a fish man. Little do they know one of these creatures still exists. The setup works so well it would be copied by any number of horror movies for decades to come.
