Nikita - Canceled

After four years Nikita comes to a close with a final episode putting Nikita (Maggie Q) and Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca) back into the field as assassins to avenge the death of Ryan (Noah Bean) and take down Amanda (Melinda Clarke) and the remaining members of the shadow organization responsible for his death. Offering us flashbacks to Nikita’s early troubled days in Division, the finale plays on themes of the character returning to the emotionless killer Division recruited but struggled to control.

As Nikita and Alex target and take down Fortune 500 members of beginning with Jones (David S. Lee), the United States Government grows increasingly uncomfortable with the situation of having their public hero so far off the reservation. Needing to contain the situation from spiraling out of control, they even go so far to green light Michael‘s (Shane West) attempt to stop her (with support from U.S. soldiers). They, like Michael, are also worried what will become of the remaining four-dozen highly-placed doubles around the globe if all their masters turn up dead and they begin to work for themselves.

As Michael, Sam (Devon Sawa), and Birkhoff (Aaron Stanford) work to contain the situation and stop Nikita before she executes the final members of the group (and leak the names of the doubles to the public), Amanda watches dumbfounded at how far over the edge Ryan’s death has pushed her former student. Of course, offering audiences one last twist, Nikita’s eventual incarceration brings her face-to-face with Amanda and turns the tables by showing Nikita has picked-up a little skill with deception just as Amanda had always advised.

With Amanda finally beaten, and Nikita cleared of all charges, the episode ends with codas for each character including Michael and Nikita finally eloping and taking their honeymoon, Sam going to work for Alex, and Birkhoff bringing both himself and Shadownet out of the shadows to begin what will likely be a very contentious relationship with the U.S. Goverment. We even get a nice farewell to Ryan whose selfless actions led to Nikita’s victory.

Putting Alex and Nikita back in the field together, something that the show hasn’t done much of in an awfully long time, works well although it means some of the supporting characters, particularly, Sam aren’t given as much to do in the finale. And sadly Lyndie Greenwood‘s conflicts with Sleepy Hollow made Sonya unavailable for the series’ final episode. The quick-paced six-episode final season wraps up the remaining threads of the series, except for all the former Division agents still active out in the world (which isn’t discussed here), and allows the characters to move onto to new adventures on their own.
