Can a Song Save Your Life?

Begin Again

Written and directed by John Carney, Begin Again is simply a joy to watch. At times this tale of the mismatched pair of a record label exec (Mark Ruffalo) whose life is swirling around the drain and a young singer-songwriter (Keira Knightley) dealing with crushing rejection of her now-successful longtime writing partner and boyfriend (Adam Levine) comes dangerously close to being too cute for its own good. Thankfully Carney’s choice to ground the film in serious issues such as heartbreak, betrayal, estranged families, and politics of the music business balances the film’s hopeful tone and message to prevent the movie from ever becoming too cliche or sappy.

While Ruffalo provides both angst and humor, Knightley is the soul of the film. Having only seen her sing in short segments of The Edge of Love (a movie worth seeing more for her performance more than anything else), I was thrilled to find a her lilting voice the perfect match for the indie songwriter thousands of miles from home dealing the emotional yo-yo of immediate heartbreak and at the same time a once-in-a-lifetime record offer.

Batman ’66 #12

Batman '66 #12Neither Marsha, Queen of Diamonds nor the Minstrel rank high the list of Batman‘s rogues gallery, but that doesn’t stop the latest issue of Batman ’66 from delivering another fun issue. The main story focuses on Marsha’s obsession with locating the world’s largest diamond which just happens to be housed in the Batcave.

Although the villain and her minions break into the Batcave and steal the diamond, writer Jeff Parker works in a reasonable explanation why Martha doesn’t know her exact location or choose to stick around to learn the true identity of the Dynamic Duo. The thread of the time-freezing potion created by Marsha’s witchy Aunt Hilda is less effective, but does make Martha a bit more formidable.

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #3

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #3Chewbacca takes center stage in the latest issue coming to the rescue of the Imperial officer Leia rescued last month whose codes the Rebellion desperately needs. Although initially not impressed with his Rebel contact, who he sees as little more than a dangerous trained dog, the Imperial officer soon gains grudging respect for the Wookiee who puts his life on the line to reach the destination where the code can be transported back to the Rebellion (and to Han Solo stuck in a cell awaiting its arrival).

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #3 continues the trend of the series of letting the newbie narrate the action from his/her perspective allowing Chewbacca to shine without attempting to translate what exactly is going on in Chewie’s mind at the time.

Next month adds Luke Skywalker to the mix and should also put Han Solo back in play as the final issue of the mini-series will hopefully put the various pieces together and reveal just what the Rebellion deems so necessary that they’ve sacrificed some of their very best to get the job done. Worth a look.

[Dark Horse, $3.50]
