Danger Man - The Gallows Tree television review

Our Throwback Tuesday post takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. The discovery of fresh fingerprints from an enemy spy (Paul Rogers) believed to be long dead sends John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) to the edge of the world after a slippery target who alluded Drake’s one chance to bring him in more than a decade before. While NATO believes the spy may be involved in some kind of smuggling operation what Drake finds is a retired man who has long ago given up spycraft and appears to be content running a small bar and inn far away from his old life.

However, the day after confronting the bar and inn keeper Drake’s life is threatened by a local (Raymond Huntley) on the rocky cliffs. The provides the second of the episode’s two action sequences (the first happens just after Drake arrives on the shore, getting caught up with a poacher and an unhappy landowner). The not-so-dead spy proves to be innocent of any involvement in either a smuggling plot or the attack on Drake’s life but the same cannot be said of the man’s daughter (Wendy Craig) who traded in her own freedom and allegiances when her father’s old bosses came calling.
