- Title: MacGyver – The Heist

MacGyver Monday takes us back to another adventure featuring science-adventurer Angus MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) who heads down to the Virgin Islands to steal back $60 million in diamonds earmarked for African relief funds. Working with the daughter (Doran Clark) of the senator (John Carter) who sent him on the mission, Mac first locates the diamonds and then stages the heist while his partner-in-crime works to create mass chaos in our villain’s casino to, ultimately unsuccessfully, hide the theft.
There a multiple MacGyverisms used over the course of the episode, most of them for either the vault break-in or various ways to rile up the customers in the casino. “Heist” doesn’t include an opening gambit, but does feature a rushed final act where MacGyver rigs together one more miracle to secure both the diamonds and his partner. Some of the best of these involve dressing down an abusive customer in the casino, a little bathroom trip to create some loaded dice for the craps table, and using both a pet bird and wine glasses to beat an alarm system.
Best known for playing the main villain in Commando, Vernon Wells may not get to go that far over-the-top here but he has a natural presence that is perfect for this kind of TV baddie. Clark is a solid one-time girl-of-the-week who holds her own in MacGyver’s plans (even if she does get captured in the end). Although a bit low-tech, both the heist and the casino shenanigans come off well-enough to sell the tale, and (even if obviously green-screened) the scene of our heroes escaping by driving a car for a diamonds off a cargo plane only to parachute safely down offers just the right cherry on top to complete the episode.
