Mu zhong wu ren, released to Western audiences as Eye for an Eye, Eye for an Eye: The Blind Swordsman, and Defiant, stars Miao Xie as the blind bounty hunter. Learning his name only at the end of the film, Cheng Xiazi’s strict regimen is interrupted when he meets a wine maker (Weiman Gao) who is raped, and her family slaughtered, on her wedding day. Receiving no help from the local police, who are fearful of the attackers powerful criminal ties, our hero champions Ni Yan’s need for vengeance.
Inspired by the Japanese film character Zatoichi, the plot of the Chinese action-drama provides the framework for those to underestimate our hero who, despite his lack of eyesight, sees more than most. The basic premise of the grumpy samurai not initially wanting to be pulled into something that doesn’t concern him would also be used in the film’s sequel. Once engaged in the fight, not even those closest to him (Zhang Di) can convince him to let the matter drop.
Mostly notable for its action sequences and fight choreography, and above average cinematography from the team of Chi Jia, Wanyi Liu, and Xiaofeng Zhao, Eye for an Eye is worth a look for action fans, as is its sequel.
