Released in 1999, “The Sirens of Time” audio drama brought together the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison), Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker), and Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) for their first adventure together. All three original actors returned for the role, although they are only finally brought together in the final chapter of a story that crosses all three timelines.
While keeping them apart allows for a separate adventure for each Doctor, giving the listener a taste of each, before bringing the trio together, it does strain the listener’s attention in separate directions (without the benefit of visuals or narration to further explore each setting on help keep a coherent narrative). In the last half-hour all the elements are brought together in a somewhat jumbled final act made somewhat less clear by the confusing motives of our titular guest-stars. The format does fight against the complexity of the story, at times.
The promise of a three-Doctor adventure is delivered, and we get some fun moments where the trio act together to solve the mystery of the Temperon, the temporal distortion known as the Kurgon Wonder, and one of the Sirens of Time who appears to each Doctor in their own timeline manipulating his actions beginning with a call for help.
The action of our Siren changes the course of time leading to the rise of the Knights of Velyshaa and their invasion of Gallifrey. In the end, thanks to the pragmatism of the most underrated of the Doctors, the three learn how to set time back on its natural path before each sets off to continue their own separate adventures.
