While the title of the episode refers to a geneticist friend of Watson (Morris Chestnut), the patient (Brittany Adebumola) in the episode suffering from multiples issues stemming for sickle cell anemia allows Watson to play with the concept of what doctors should and shouldn’t do to save their patient. Putting his career on the line, while attempting to hide what he’s doing from the team, Watson performs an unapproved medical procedure which saves his patient’s life leaving the team, and his ex-wife, to face the ramifications.

Loosely based on the three-issue comic of the same name, Hellboy: The Crooked Man was a critical and box office flop attempting to steer into more horror aspects of the Hellboy comics without the humor or charm of the Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman films. The choice allows for the film to go with a lower budget and more of a indie horror movie feel, but ultimately comes off more confused than creepy and more cheap than cost-effective.
