With the chaos of the recent Gulf oil spill dying down the crew of News Night gathers together to do their first real show by putting the kind of news voters need to know instead of their usual ratings-based coverage. At the same time Will (Jeff Daniels) sneaks off to talk to his ratings guy (Chris Messina), who (Sam Waterston) ordered not to talk to Will, and contemplates a segment to appeal to Republican viewers.

Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #3

atomic-robo-real-science-adventures-3-coverAtomic Robo returns with more sciencey adventures including the continuation of The Sparrow‘s WWII spy story and Robo training with Bruce Lee as well as a pair of new stories including a battle of 19th Century flying ships with a turn of the century celebrity crew.

“Tesla’s Electric Schooner” finds Nikola Tesla and the unlikely band of George Westinghouse, Charles Fort, Annie Oakley, Wong Kei-ying, Winfield Scott Lovecraft, and Harry Houdini all working together aboard Tesla’s latest invention to take down the War Zepplin. This along with the continuing Sparrow’s tale turn out to be the two best adventures of the issue (making this an aberration as neither star Atomic Robo).

The fourth tale, “Atomic Robo and the Electromatic Dream Machine” finds the science adventurer trapped in a dreamlike battle of wits with a disgruntled fired scientist. It’s fun, but not too memorable. Worth a look.

The result, The Amazing Spider-Man, at times feels very much a retread of Raimi’s Spider-Man as it focuses on a very similar plot and villain. However, Webb’s film makes a number of different choices that make it at least the equal of Raimi’s first Spidey film.

Andrew Garfield is cast in the role of science nerd Peter Parker, a Midtown Science High School student and loner. The film begins with a scene of Peter’s parents (Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz), scientists for Oscorp, leaving Peter with his Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) just before they disappear.
