Red Sonja Holiday Special

The 2021 Red Sonja Holiday Special offers a pair of mostly forgettable stories set in the cold of winter for readers that take place outside of Sonja‘s current timeline.

After being cursed by a dying wizard, Red Sonja finds herself haunted by a ghost in “Sonja’s Carol” forcing the She-Devil with a Sword to look back at her recent choices and how continuing to kill for Draken will poison her future.

In “The Dance of Fire” Sonja sets out after a pair of thieves and killers known as the Gallows Brothers only to stumble across an odd ritual in the woods as a wizard forces Sonja to dance around a fire with the other maidens, offering their lives to the gods for a plentiful harvest. Despite forcing Sonja to dance all night, things don’t turn out as the wizard had hoped.

Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #2

Hellboy: The Bones of Giants continues as Hellboy is visited by Svartalves in the night helping  Professor Edmond Aickman escape. He also brings home a pair of Nidavellim, talks to a chipmunk, and has a conversation with a Valkyrie ghost. Oh, and he’s still kinda possessed by the Norse god Thor. Let’s just say it’s been a weird couple of days for our hero.

What Hellboy knows, thanks to a pair of Nidavellim, is that the professor is responsible for opening a crypt of the Frost Giant Thrym who a new cult hopes to see resurrected. After the stressful night, our intrepid heroes go in search of the missing professor only to discover they may have been to late as the madman may have succeeded in raising a giant from his grave. I don’t think things are going to get any less weird any time soon.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #123

With all of his brothers carving out new lives and relationships for themselves, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #123 offers readers a Leonardo story as the Splinter Clan‘s leader feels a bit lost, runs into an old friend, and has a night that changes his outlook on things. Leo’s always been my favorite of the Turtles, so I’m happy to see him highlighted here. The unexpected night out with Casey Jones, also feeling a bit left out with Raphael busy elsewhere, turns out to provide a fun single issue with a look into Leo’s mind.

We get a trip to a fight club, an introduction of a character teased earlier, Casey and Leonardo dealing with some street trash, and Leo thinking through finding new connections outside of his family. Not complete without a tie-in to the ongoing story, we also see the return of Old Hob luring away the weasels. What new trouble is he up to?

Usagi Yojimbo #24

“Ransom” concludes as Miyamoto Usagi, Yukichi Yamamoto, and Kitsune look to rescue the kidnapped Kiyoko. The ransom trade is complicated by a few factors including Kiyoko freeing herself before her friends even arrive and the ledger that Boss Hasegawa wants in exchange for Kiyoko being stolen back by one of his own agents.

It doesn’t take long before all hell to break loose. Although our protagonists come out victorious, and Kistune and Kiyoko find a way to make a profit on the ordeal, Usagi has made a new enemy in Boss Hasegawa (but also a new friend in Aoki, the honorable samurai who accepts Usagi’s wisdom about not serving an dishonorable lord). The ronins hit the road once more, but where will their travels take them next and will Yukichi get to meet any more of Usagi’s friends?

Wonder Woman: Black & Gold #6

The concluding issue of Wonder Woman: Black & Gold offers five more tales of Wonder Woman‘s adventures in black and white, with a splash of gold. The six-issue mini-series ends on more of whimper than a bang. My favorite of the bunch, “Attack of the 50-Foot Wonder Woman,” swaps the powers between Giganta and and out-of-control giant Wonder Woman who her adversary has to find a way to talk down.

“Role Model” showcases Wonder Woman’s generational impact on the women of the world by highlighting her relationship with an old friend who has grown into her role of a Congresswoman years later. In “The Prophet” the adventures of an exiled Amazon Berchta returns to Themyscira as told through the fevered visions of someone dreaming Wonder Woman in another world.
