Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #2

Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World #2 comic reviewRuna, Saarvin, Patience, Amos, and Belvyre continue their trek across the icy Icewind Dale in a second issue that offers quite a bit of bickering among the group prior to them taking shelter in a cave and then getting a good look at the Zombie Frost Giants following them.

The giants are fun, as is the back and forth between our unlikely group that is balanced by the quick friendship forged between Runa and Saarvin. I also quite enjoyed some of the reaction shots we get in this issue from artist Martin Coccolo as events play out.

Firefly: Blue Sun Rising #1

Firefly: Blue Sun Rising #1 comic reviewFirefly: Blue Sun Rising #1 concludes the Blue Sun arc that gave fans a look at the operations of the Blue Sun Corproation which was set-up in the television show’s original run but never fully developed. The arc, which takes place before the events of Serenity, also sets up the location of Haven as this issue marks the departure of Shepherd Book from Serenity as well of the temporary departure of several other members of the crew.

Despite not reading the issues prior, Firefly: Blue Sun Rising #1 is easy to follow as it sticks to the show’s standard set-up. The storyline involves Malcolm Reynolds and company picking a fight with Blue Sun. As the comic opens, Serenity is dead in space thanks to Blue Sun’s technology powering several of the ship’s systems. Only a quick fix allows for the survival of the ship and crew thanks to borrowing parts from one of the ship’s passengers.

Batman Beyond #50

Batman Beyond #50 comic reviewThe latest volume of Batman Beyond concludes with Batman framed for multiple attacks around Gotham City by Inque, one of which puts Bruce Wayne and Terry’s younger brother in the hospital. Wonder Woman arrives to help solve the mystery, and clear Batman’s name (thankfully we’re saved from a lengthy heroic misunderstanding as Diana sizes up Terry in short order).

Inque was one of the stand-out villains from Batman Beyond and although her motivations seem a bit muddled (blaming Bruce Wayne for preventing the villain a chance to cure her condition) she’s put to good use against the formidable duo of Batman and Wonder Woman.

Action Comics #1028

Action Comics #1028 comic reviewAction Comics #1028 offers an epilogue to “The House of Kents,” and really Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr.’s entire run on the title. Most notable for some small moments, the issue works to both catch-up readers who may have not read every issue as well as set-up a new status quo within The Daily Planet whose new owner is… Jimmy Olsen?

Aside from Jimmy summarizing the storyline from his Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen series which gave him half of Lex Luthor’s fortune (and provided the capital needed to buy The Daily Planet), the comic also catches readers up on Conner Kent suggesting that the clone’s powers may have a shelf-life. It also takes Connor back to the Kent Farm (which seems a little odd given his reunion with the Kents was already covered in Action Comics #1022) and also reintroduces him to an old friend.

Batman: Black and White #1

Batman: Black and White #1 comic reviewBatman: Black and White returns for another series of stories featuring the Dark Knight Detective in black-and-white adventures. The standout to Batman: Black and White #1 is the final tale of the issue by G. Willow Wilson and Greg Smallwood which involves Batman tracking down Killer Croc to a woman’s apartment. Along with a nice twist, “Metamorphosis” offers the best art of of the collection as Smallwood makes use of the shadows and the Gotham night to frame our leading man to maximum effect.

Although there isn’t a must-read tale in the issue, “Metamorphosis” is worth giving the issue a chance, even if the rest of the stories don’t quite measure up.
