Once and Future #8

Once and Future #8 comic reviewOnce and Future #8 confirms both the identity of the old wizard we saw in the last issue steal the Beowulf manuscript as Merlin and explain why he has been working in the shadows to bring Bewoulf back into the world. Despite Bridgette’s assertion that Beowulf is nothing more than a poem, the now flesh-and-blood legendary warrior strolls both into Zombie Camelot and later finds his way onto the top of Duncan’s car (as Rose’s warning comes seconds too late).

Beowulf makes a powerful ally for Zombie Arthur and Merlin who trick the legendary hero and send him after Duncan and his Gran. I’ll be curious to see what direction the story takes. Will Duncan need to best the hero? Or merely make him see the truth?

Batman: The Adventures Continue #6

Batman: The Adventures Continue #6 comic reviewOn orders from Lex Luthor, Deathstroke finally shows his true colors while luring Batman into his trap by promising the Dark Knight Detective a chance to take down Firefly (who, like Deathstroke, isn’t what “he” appears to be).

While still on the periphery of the larger story, and not willing to see someone take out Batman and ruin his plans, Jason Todd leaves just enough clues for Batgirl and Robin to show up and help lend a hand against the assassin. Although, did Batman really need their help?

Young Justice #15

Young Justice #15 comic reviewSince the beginning of the series characters of been bouncing around the Multiverse, but with Young Justice #15 Superboy and the rest of the expanded Young Justice cast are finally back together on Earth. After quickly wrapping up the lingering plot thread of Dr. Glory (who Conner isn’t above toying with before turning her over to the FBI), the comic moves to the larger issue of Conner’s place in the world by Bart explaining the idea of Crisis while Superboy was on Gemworld and how this Earth was reshaped in his absence.

For teenagers, many of them take quite new to the super-hero game, they take the news of universal reset by some force unknown fairly well. And Superboy appears happy just to be home, with plenty of feels to go around (although he realizes Bart knows more than he’s telling).

Lady Zorro #1

Lady Zorro #1 comic reviewThe new one-shot from American Mythology reintroduces the character of Lady Zorro roaming through the countryside following in the wake of a path of destruction caused by a secret cabal of Spanish soldiers. Although the name Zorro is known in some parts, Lady Zorro is not, but that is about to change.

Like the Zorro comics currently being published by American Mythology, Lady Zorro #1 has a definite occult horror flavor that is never my first choice for Zorro stories. That said, the Prodigo seeking power through the Native American graveyards they plunder works to help sell the latest tribe that Lady Zorro is here to help and tying everything back to the Native American mythology works a bit better than demons.

Ghost-Spider #10

Ghost-Spider #10 comic reviewAnother volume of Ghost-Spider comes to a close as the final issue in the series leaves fans with a cliffhanger and uncertain future for our heroine. Johnny Storm and Sue Storm finally show their true colors in Ghost-Spider #10 by attacking Gwen and threatening not only her life but that of her father if she doesn’t leave New York to its newest heroes.

Things feel a bit rushed and confused here, but that plays into Gwen’s own emotions after being blindsided by the Storms who use force, blackmail, and threats to push Ghost-Spider out of the way. Several parts of the ongoing story are left unresolved here. Does Gwen simply jump dimensions? What’s going on with that Gwenom suit that keeps showing up (but is never commented on)?
