SHAZAM! #9

SHAZAM! #9 comic reviewSHAZAM! #9 reveals the final choice of champions as Billy Batson shares his power with… his father? I’ll admit to being disappointed that the comic didn’t seize on the opportunity for Billy to offer his power to one of the creatures from the other lands the family has visited over the past eight issues (like say a bunny).

That said, I will admit that the choice of C.C. Batson was one I didn’t see coming and Billy’s choice to choose to share is his power with both his foster family and his birth father, against the wizard’s wishes, offers a nice moment as well as finally reunites the family after being separated across the various magical lands for most of the series.

Suicide Squad #1

Suicide Squad #1 comic reviewDC launches a new version of the Suicide Squad pitting a makeshift team against a group of super-powered terrorists known as the Revolutionaries. There are a few familiar faces in Deadshot and Harley Quinn but the rest of the team, chosen not by Amanda Waller but by her replacement Lok, features questionable members like the Cavalier, the Shark, Zebra Man, and Magpie.

As we’ve seen in several previous versions of the series, not all of the members will make it through the first issue alive. The twist here is that most are used as nothing more than cannon fodder in order for Lok to recruit the Revolutionaries as their replacements. My trouble here is that most of the Revolutionaries don’t seem much more interesting that the Squad members who they are replacing (at least the D-Listers were worth making fun of).

Batman & the Outsiders #8

Batman & the Outsiders #8 comic reviewDespite a late betrayal by one of their own, the Outsiders successfully return to Gotham City with Sofia Ramos in Batman & the Outsiders #8. Opening with the betrayal of Kaliber, the latest issue of the series confirms the death of Alfred has been what has kept Batman from being in the field with the Outsiders over the comic’s first arc.

It also offers a look at the Batcave through new eyes as Sofia takes another step into the world of heroes and villains while providing a pair of nice moments between Sofia and Katana, and between Signal and Cassandra who offer each other support after the turmoil of recent events.
