Superman #1

Superman #1 comic reviewFollowing up the pair’s six-issue mini-series The Man of Steel, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Ivan Reis begin their run on the new ongoing Superman title. Superman #1 re-introduces readers to Superman‘s world, offers the creation of a new Fortress of Solitude, and includes cameos of Justice League members checking in after recent events.

There are several little gems in this issue, but I think my favorite might be the short discussion between Superman and the Martian Manhunter. During J’onn’s plea for Superman to taking a more active role in the leadership of Earth, Superman keeps bowing out to solve some issue or another halfway around the world (but always giving J’onn 99% of his attention when he returns). A great illustration of Superman jumping into action whenever needed, it offers interesting argument from the Martian while still showcasing Superman’s modesty in the face of what he can do and what is asked of him.

Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider #21

Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider #21 comic reviewBen Reilly: Scarlet Spider #21 offers two separate storylines for Ben Reilly and Kaine, while leading each down a path which should bring both Scarlet Spiders back together in the next issue. Reilly’s search for the doctor who can cure Abigail Mercury ends in a fight with Sauron, and a cryptic message from the dying scientist about the Diogenes Initiative.

Meanwhile, Kaine still has his hands full with the Mindless One under the control of bratty kid about to cause a whole lot of mayhem in downtown Las Vegas. While not his finest hour, the other Scarlet Spider holds his own until the arrival of a mysterious woman ends the craziness and takes the creature back to her secret lab… which so happens to also be known as the Diogenes Initiative.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 comic reviewAlthough I like the character, the are a couple of reasons I haven’t been a regular reader on one of his titles for quite some time. The character’s convoluted, and often retconned, history (which has been patched so often you can’t see what it was originally supposed to look like) and writers who focus on making Peter Parker‘s life a struggle without capturing the joy of being Spider-Man, have too often made Spidey comics a chore to read.

The first issue of the newly relaunched The Amazing Spider-Man, to no surprise, throws Peter under the bus once more. Not only is he accused of plagiarism, loses his job at The Daily Planet, living with a super-villain, and earns the disapproval of Aunt May (a character who should never have been brought back), but he also has to deal with the distrust of other heroes once New York City’s Mayor starts fucking with him in the press.

Star Wars #50

Star Wars #50 comic reviewIssue #50 kicks off a new arc that shows the culmination of the Rebellion’s hard work. The Rebel Fleet has finally been assembled. It’s an impressive sight to behold. Finally, the Rebellion has a weapon to fight back against the Empire. While showing it off new toys and new level of unity to their closest allies, however, things begin to go horribly wrong.

There’s certainly a huge emotional shift in Part 1 of “Hope Dies.” The celebration is cut short when the Rebels discover several of their ships have been sabotaged by Trios who betrays her new friends. That itself would be bad enough, but the arrival of Darth Vader and a fleet of Imperial ships to spring the trap foreshadows big trouble for the Rebellion heading into the next issue.
