Charlie’s Angels #1

“Once upon a time there were three little girls who went to the police academy…”

Charlie's Angels #1 comic reviewThe classic TV-show Charlie’s Angels gets new life as a comic. Dynamite Entertainment’s new series keeps the Angels in the 1970s, and opens with the trio working undercover in the Limbo Lounge to overhear a meeting between a skeezy crook forcing his way into the profitable night club and his equally sleazy guest.

Hired by the clubs original owner, the Angels are looking for evidence to push the criminal element out of the Limbo Lounge. All hell breaks loose during Sabrina‘s magic act, but it turns out to be all part of the plan. Of course no Angels plan is complete with a few wrinkles and some quick thinking to get their client out of a jam. However, there looks to be more trouble for our heroines on the horizon in the form of two foreign agents with dastardly plans.

Astro City #52

Astro City #52 comic reviewThe longest continuous run of Astro City comes to a close in issue 52. Writer Kurt Busiek and artist Brent Anderson aren’t going away as they still have several projects in mind to continue and explore a world where heroes are observed by, and often interact with, the city’s locals. Even knowing that there are other graphic novels, mini-series, and one-shots still to come, it will be missed.

Astro City #52 concludes the volume’s final arc centering around Michael Tenicek, a broken man whose wife was deleted from existence during one of the Honor Guard‘s battles years ago. Since then the man has found meaning leading a support group of others affected by super-heroes and being the only one to remember a woman who the rest of the world never knew existed.

Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider #20

Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider #20 comic reviewWith the battle with Mysterio and his daughter behind them, both Scarlet Spiders attempt to move on. For Ben Reilly that means continuing to try and save Abigail Mercury from the incurable Crooks’ disease. Tracking down the expert who has illuded him, the Scarlet Spider discovers why the willing scientist hasn’t been more responsive to his pleas: he’s unknowingly been a captive of Sauron.

The other storyline feels a lot like Kaine‘s short comic run as the other Scarlet Spider deals with a Mindless One left over from his trip to the other dimension who bonds with a spirited young boy to cause all kinds of havoc. Now all the hero needs to do is try and convince the kid to give up his invulnerable and destructive new friend who obeys all of his commands. Good luck.

Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #4

Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #4 comic reviewHappy Usagi is one of my favorite things. There’s a moment in Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #4, during a lull in the case, where Inspector Ishida invites the rabbit ronin home with him and Miyamoto Usagi enjoys the hospitality of his friend, wife, and son. While there’s still plenty of work to be done in the remaining three issues of the series, it is nice to see Usagi get a respite (however short it turns out to be).

As to the larger arc of the issue, Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #4 picks up with Usagi and Ishida being led into an ambush the the street thief and being forced to slice their way through a large number of cheap merecenaries before the remaining turn tail and run. It’s so hard to get good help these days.
