Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #20

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #20 comic reviewTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #20 features Raphael and Alopex working together to free animals at Null Industries before they can be mutated. There’s plenty of action here as the pair square of against the murderous Zodi and the equally scary (but apparently far less-murderous) Krisa who Alopex is able to reason with long enough for our heroes to successfully finish their mission.

Of all the newer Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters Alopex is my favorite. Designed by Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, the mutant Arctic Fox is a perfect fit for the craziness of of TMNT. I like the pairing of Alopex and Raph together, particularly in a heavy-action story like this one. The issue also raised my curiosity about Krisha. Given Zodi’s decision to cover for the newcomer with their boss it will be interesting to see where Krisha’s path leads in the coming months.

Jessica Jones #18

Jessica Jones #18 comic reviewThe aptly-titled “The Big Goodbye” isn’t only writer Brian Michael Bendis’ final comic on the character created but it’s also one of the last comics of Bendis’ run at Marvel before moving to DC. The set-up gives us a Jessica a bit more in control than usual, while the world around her is still quite crazy. Hired by the girlfriend of the Armadillo (a D-list Marvel character if there ever was one) to find the unfortunate sod who has being picking fights with all the wrong super-hero types and convince him to come home leads Jessica to conversations with various heroes including Spider-Man, the other Spider-Man, the Thing, and Ironheart.

Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #1

Usagi Yojimbo: The Hidden #1 comic reviewThe new seven-issue mini-series from Dark Horse Comics starts not with our title character but with a chase through town, death, and a theft which will present a new mystery for Inspector Ishida and Miyamoto Usagi to solve. The introduction of Usagi and Ishida comes fairly late in this first issue, but it does help to begin frame the reasoning for a pair of murders and new policies from the Shogun to ferret out those with dangerous religious ideas.

Given the extended set-up, one thing we do learn is that Japan has begun to take a dim view of Christians within its borders. Just how much this theme will play into the investigation is yet to be seen.

Batman #43

Batman #43 comic review“Everyone Loves Ivy” concludes as Catwoman spends time with the woman who has taken the world, providing just enough distraction for Batman to put his plan into action and release the one person from Ivy‘s control who may be able to talk the super-villain out of remaking the world in her image.

Heading into the Batman/Catwoman wedding, Batman #43 offers us all three of the Gotham Sirens at something of a crossroads. Harley Quinn has taken more of an anti/quasi-hero role in recent years and this issues suggests something may be possible for Ivy as well.
