Koshchei the Deathless #2

Koshchei the Deathless #2 comic reviewIn the second issue of the six-issue mini-series, Koshchei continues his tale. After making a pact with Baba Yaga, the warrior (and his few remaining soldiers the witch didn’t kill) journey through a woods and beyond on their quest to kill dragons before a new generation can be born. Along the way they will meet Yeshii the woodsman, the grown human son of a cow, and a cursed man now living out his existence as a snake. They also follow a magical ball of yarn for a bit.

The odd journey will eventually lead them to the ruins of the once great Kingdom of Dragons, the unhatched eggs the witch told Koshchei about… and their protector who isn’t so keen on visitors.

Astro City #50

Astro City #50 comic reviewI always love to see writer Kurt Busiek and artist Brent Anderson delve into the nuts-and-bolts of a world where super-heroes exist, and how such a world might effect every day folks. A sequel to the Eisner-nominated “The Nearness of You,” Astro City #50 introduces us to Michael Tenicek who runs a support group for those touched by super-villain violence.

In a world where the bizarre and inexplicable can take loved ones and leave scars, of course Astro City would need something like this to exist and allow people to gather and share their experiences, pain, and fear.

Jessica Jones #16

Jessica Jones #16 comic reviewAfter her attempt to kill (and then beat-up) the Purple Man failed, Jessica Jones #16 picks up the story with Kilgrave in control of Carol Danvers (and the surrounding mob) and wanting very much to sit down for a conversation with his favorite human being.

Believing her end has arrived, Jessica doesn’t hold back with what she thinks of the villain who takes sadistic pleasure in controlling others for his own amusement. And when Kilgrave becomes philosophical about his role on Earth, it’s all our intrepid P.I. can do not to lose her shit.

Mystik U #2

Mystik U #2 comic reviewWhat if Zatanna went to Hogwarts? That’s the basic premise behind the mini-series where Zatanna’s past is altered allowing a younger version of the character to attend a magical university known as Mystik U. The first issue set up the basic concept of Zatanna needing to change her past in order to be prepared for a dark evil in the future. To that end we’ve seen Zatanna meet a group of new friends and attempt to fit into the magical collegiate community.

While still foreshadowing that one student will eventually go evil, Mystik U #2 features two major stories. In the first we see Zatanna earn the attention of a magical sorority. While her friends warn her about the group, Zatanna learns the hard way about dangers lurking on campus.
