Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade #1

Tomb Raider: Survivor's Crusade #1 comic reviewThe first issue of Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade takes Lara Croft to Corniglia, Italy inside a secret underground tomb discovered by Trinity. Lara isn’t there for the tomb, its riddles, or its treasures. She’s come seeking out members of the mysterious organization for answers concerning the identity of the person responsible for her father’s death.

Narrated throughout with the multiple attempts by our protagonist to explain her absence, and failing, the first issue does a fairly good job in kicking off the point of the series and just what Lara is questing for this time around. Although I enjoy Ashley A. Woods’ work, I’m not wild about the art in this issue. The action scenes work well-enough but there’s a grit to Lara and her adventures that doesn’t come across well in this first issue.

Astro City #49

Astro City #49 comic reviewAstro City #49 takes a look at the unusual hero Registor as shown through the eyes of a reporter who catches the wiff (literally) of a story with ties to her childhood when she witnesses the hero appear to stop an attack by Earthpride white supremacists during a protest. With ties to old school civil disobedience, civil rights protests and rallies, I’d be curious to know the origins of this story which tie our protagonist’s current search back to her missing father.

Doomsday Clock #1

Doomsday Clock #1 comic reviewDC Comics’ next big event begins here. Born out the the Rebirth reboot, which introduced that idea that Dr. Manhattan was responsible for the shitstorm that was The New 52, Doomsday Clock #1 returns us to the world of Watchmen. Despite his plan initially succeeding, Ozymandias has seen the truth exposed by the Rorschach journal and his world fall back into chaos.

The first issue of the twelve-issue maxi-series re-introduces us to the world of Watchmen along with a new, but apparently no less disturbed, Rorschach. After freeing the Mime and the Marionette, Rorschach and Ozymandias will begin their search for Dr. Manhattan who is now their last hope to save their world. However, he’s been busy playing in a different reality.

Darth Vader #8

Darth Vader #8 comic reviewSometimes it’s hard to be a Dark Lord of the Sith (especially after you’ve murdered most of your friends, choked out your wife, and had your best friend cut off your legs and leave you to burn in a pool of lava… okay, that last one he probably deserved).

Darth Vader #8 picks up with a bored Darth Vader getting the chance to stop terrorizing Imperial officers and direct his attention elsewhere. While the arc also focuses a bit more on the Emperor‘s Inquisitors, we don’t see much of them here as the two halves of the story are split between Vader and Jedi Master Jocasta Nu who returns to the Jedi Temple to safeguard hidden Jedi relics from the Sith.

The Wild Storm #9

The Wild Storm #9 comic reviewThe Wild Storm spins its wheels a bit in issue #9 which proves to be more about setting up future events in the series (IO’s Jacklyn King planning a covert cyberwar attack against Skywatch, and Angela Spica being introduced to Jacob Marlowe‘s secret laboratory) than big reveals or takeaways. That said, the issue is highlighted by some strong art by Jon Davis-Hunt in what little we see of the lab and one hell of a silent extended action sequence set in John Colt‘s past in feudal Japan.
